Volovick was born in the present day Ukraine in Kremenchuk as the youngest son of a Jewish family with seven children. He got early drawing lessons and studied at the academies of Kharkov and Kiev from 1917. With his friend Kostya Terechkovich he emigrated to France, where he settled in Paris in 1921. In Paris he socialized numerous contacts with contemporary artists and mets his future wife, the dancer Lya Grebina, who he accompanied later on the tour around the world. In 1936 they lived few months in New York and London. 1944 he moved to Montparnasse, 11 rue Jules Chaplain. He worked in the studio of his friend Vladimir Naiditch at the Boulevard St. Jacques.
