Thomas Buttersworth, Sr.

Biography from the Archives of askART

From England where he spent most of his painting career, Thomas Buttersworth was known for his marine watercolor and oil paintings and charcoal drawings, especially battle scenes. He was a mariner himself, which meant that many of his depictions were based on first-hand observations.  Examples include Inshore Squadron off Cadiz (1797), which is in the National Maritime Museum in London.

In 1795, Buttersworth was assigned to the ship Enterprise in London, and several years later was on the Caroline during the French wars. However, by 1800, he was land bound, having become an invalid during sea duty in Minorca. He assumed the appointment of Marine Painter for the East India Company, which led him to a new phase of his painting career---ship portraits.

He did not do much exhibiting of his paintings during his lifetime. Some art historians have listed him as dying in 1830, but further research made it obvious that date was incorrect because he did paintings of Queen Victoria's visit to Edinburgh, Scotland in 1842. He died in London later that year.
