He studied in France under the Impressionist artists Raphael Collin, Rene Prinet, Jean-Paul Laurens, and Richard Miller. Impressionist works are characterized by broad, expressive brushstrokes and the careful and accurate depiction of light and shadow.
Kahill spent time in Paris, France, where his works were first shown in 1909. There, he made his mark as a portrait painter and was commissioned by many prominent politicians.
Kahill was a member of the Portland Society of Artists and affiliated with the Society of Independent Artists. Today, he is represented in many important collections, including The Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, England, and the University of Maine.
In his painting Early Snow, Kahill employed the same expressiveness as in his portraits but he used a broader brushstroke, reminiscent of his time spent studying under the Impressionists. This landscape is covered in a fresh white snowfall, and cool shadows of pines fall over a trail. The trail leads off into the distant forest as the mountains loom over the scene before fading into the serene sky. The trees of the New England forest provide a glowing contrast to the pure, white snow. Kahill used a simple composition, creating a quiet, peaceful scene expressing a sense of solitude and calm.
His work can be seen at the Federal Building in Portland, the Maine State Capital Building, Bates College and the University of Maine.
Kahill died in 1957.
