Vincent Aderente

Biography from the Archives of askART

Vincent Aderente (1880-1941)

He was born February 20,1880 in Naples, Italy, and came to the United States with his parents at the age of six settling in New York City.  He attended the Art Student League studying with Henry Siddons Mowbray.  In 1896 he began a professional relationship with Edwin Howland Blashfield, one of America's greatest mural painters, when he assisted him in painting the Waldorf Astoria Ballroom. The working relationship lasted over 30 years with Aderente collaborating on and executing many of Blashfield's designs. Blashfield was a celebrated artist, leader of The American Renaissance in mural painting and the preeminent practitioner and theorist of mural painting at the time when murals were a major element of important buildings.  In her 2009 book titled Edwin Howland Blashfield, Master American Muralist, Mina Weiner notes how Aderente and another assistant contributed significantly to many of Blashfields murals.  Indeed, many of Blashfield's major murals include the signature of Vincent Aderente along side that of his master. Aderente's painting style became virtually inseperable from that of Blashfield's.  The differences being that Aderente approached the canvas with a lighter technique, little preliminary brushwork, a thinner application of paint and a preference for less bold colors.  Some of the murals which Aderente collaborated on with Blashfield are:  Library of Congress, Cathedral of St. Matthews Washington D.C., Utah State Capital, Elks Veterans Memorial Chicago, Detroit Public Library, Iowa St. Capital, MIT Walker Murals, Wisconsin St. Capital, Ballroom Ceiling Waldorf Astoria Hotel New York, Minnesota St. Capital, Mercerberg Academy Pennsylvania and City College of New York.

Aderente also painted many independent commissions such as: United States Department of the Treasury, Denver Mint Colorado, Yonkers City Hall in New York, Justicee William Brennan Courthouse in New Jersey, Luzerne County Courhouse in Wilkes Barre Pennsylvania, Ceiling of the Boston Opera House, Codington County Courthouse in South Dakota, Hudson County Courthouse in Jersey City, Kings County Hospital Brooklyn, Albany City Hall New York, St. Josephs Church Jamaica New York, Dickerson High School New Jersey and Queens Supreme Courthouse Jamaica New York.

Along with his mural work Aderente painted many studies for these murals, usually on a smaller scale which have survived.  The Smithsonian Institution has several works by Aderente in their collection along with an extensive grouping of photographs of his murals as well as easel paintings in private collections.  This works can be seen at "Archives of American Art", Smithsonian Art Museum web site.  The American Red Cross has a painting created for a poster during World War One in their collection in Bayside, New York.  Another more famous poster created by Aderente was titled Columbia Calls, also done during World War One.   Aderente's work as an illustrator is less known but he was a contributor to American magazines like Scribner's, Cosmopolitan and American Weekly

Member: Mural Painters of New York; Architects League

Permanent Collections: The Smithsonian Institution (Postal Museum), Washington, D.C.; collection of the American Red Cross.

Vincent Aderente worked up to the year of his death, June 13, 1941, finishing murals on the life of Abraham Lincoln.
