Ronald Parker

Biography from the Archives of askART

Ronald S. Parker B.Ed. (1942)

A well known Canadian wildlife artist, painter, sculptor and printmaker, Ronald S. Parker (AKA: Ron Parker) was born in Vancouver, British Columbia and currently lives in Victoria, British Columbia. He has also lived in Kimberley (Wasa), B.C. and Courtenay, B.C., and he's travelled in the Yukon, Northwest Territories, the Rocky Mountains, Kenya and Costa Rica.

His mediums include oils, acrylics, watercolors, gouache*, serigraph*, bronze and limited edition prints. His most well-known works are realistic paintings of wildlife (primarily mammals and birds) in their habitat. However, his oeuvre includes portraits, figures, nudes, landscapes, shorelines, boats, social commentary, spirituality and allegory* all done in various styles such as Realism*, Impressionism*, Modernism* and Fauvism*. AskART images have some good illustrations of his work. (1)

After graduating from high school, Parker apprenticed in commercial art (1960) and later earned a Bachelor of Education degree (1976) from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver; but as an artist he is considered self taught. It is frequently noted that his inspiration to paint came after viewing an exhibition of bird paintings by James Fenwick Lansdowne (see AskART) in 1977. Parker became a professional artist in 1978.

His works were included in the "26th Annual Exhibition of the Society of Animal Artists" at the California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco (1986); in "The Art of Survival" at the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto (1987 - 1988); and in "Birds in Art 1996: An International Exhibition" at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, Wausau, Wisconsin and touring to the Dayton Museum of Natural History (now Boonshoft Museum of Discovery), Dayton, Ohio; Bell Museum of Natural History, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis; and the National Museum of Wildlife Art, Jackson, Wyoming (1996 - 1997). His works have also been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions at numerous prominent galleries throughout North America such as Beckett Gallery, Hamilton, Ontario; Frameworks and Wildlife Gallery, Barneveld, New York; Germanton Gallery, Germanton, N.C.; Grasslands Gallery, Edmonton, Alberta; Harrison Galleries, Vancouver, B.C.; Pacific Wildlife Gallery, Lafayette, California; Peninsula Gallery, Sidney, B.C.; Rocky Mountain Gallery, Calgary, Alberta; The Avenue Gallery, Victoria, B.C.; and Webster Galleries, Calgary, Alberta.

In 1993, he was commissioned by the Royal Canadian Mint to design four platinum collector 'Sea Otter' coins which were subsequently issued in 1994.
