Martin Kainz

Biography from the Archives of askART

Martin Kainz, German/American Expressionist painter, was born in the tiny village of Herbertshausen near Munich, Germany on May 7, 1899.  Working at an early age in a paint factory led him to the pursuit of art.  He studied at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, 1922-1926, and emigrated to the United States later that same year and settled in New York City.

His first American one-man show was at the Ralston Gallery, NY in 1927.  Additional exhibitions of his work were held at the Kasper Gallery, Berlin, 1927; Yorke Galleries, Wash DC 1929, Dudensing Gallery, NY 1932, Weyhe Gallery NY 1935, 1936; Westermann Gallery, NY 1936, 1938, 1940, Lilienfeld Galleries, NY, 1946, Gallerie Kainz, Berlin, 1956; Goethe Gallery, Montreal 1964, Reading, PA Museum, 1932.

Kainz established a studio in Carmel, NY, (Putnam County), in 1938 and lived there until his death in 1982.  A retrospective exhibition of his work was held at the Somerstown Gallery, Somers, NY 1986.

Kainz's work includes landscapes, still life and portrait studies painted in a bold, direct, expressionistic style.  Although all of his work has a representational genesis, color is the most important element in his paintings. He gained luminosity in his oil paintings by piling up layer upon layer of vivid color.  His watercolors reflect strong color contrasts reminiscent of the Fauves and other German Expressionists such as Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Wassily Kandinsky, Franz Marc and Max Pechstein.  Kainz suffered a massive stroke in 1975, and when he returned to painting his work was lighter, more direct and abstract.  He also produced etchings, lithographs and woodcuts.

Prepared and submitted August 2004 by Noel F Marks, Lancaster County Antique Art, from the artist's personal papers, original exhibition catalogs and contemporary newspaper reviews.
