Biography from Dixon-Hall Fine Art
Born at Jamaica, Long Island, New York, Albert Van Nesse Greene studied first at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., followed by the Art Students' League in New York, the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia and Chester Springs. Greene was most influenced by William Merritt Chase, Fred Wagner, Daniel Garber, Claude Monet and Edgar Degas.

Greene settled in Chester Springs, PA from 1920 until his death in 1971 where he maintained a studio near the landscape school of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He is known for his landscapes of the scenery along the French and Pickering Creeks and the Schuylkill River. Greene was a member of the Philadelphia Sketch Club, Philadelphia Art Alliance, the Society of Independent Artists, the Society of American Artists, the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Salons of America and was a fellow of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

Greene was seriously wounded while serving as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army in France during World War I. Out of gratitude for the help he received from the government after the war, Greene left the entire contents of his studio to the United States Government. In 1972 the White House curator instructed the Yellow Springs Association to auction off the estate whose proceeds were then split jointly between the two parties.

Greene's paintings are in many important private and public collections including the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. and Historic Yellow Springs.  He is included in the Michener Art Museum publication of Pennsylvania Impressionism (2002) and in New Hope for American Art (2005).
