He was an important member of the surrealist movement in Paris, Mexico, and New York.  Fleeing the Spanish Civil War, Francés traveled to Paris where became an intimate member of the surrealist circle that included Breton, Tanguy, Oscar Dominguez, Victor Brauner, Roberto Matta, and Gordon Onslow Ford, among others.  

In the 1930s, Esteban Francés was a paramour of the important Spanish/Mexican painter Remedios Varo, to whom he introduced the tenets of surrealism.  Shortly after the beginning of World War II, Francés fled for Mexico where he joined other ex-patriates Leonora Carrington, Varo, and Wolfgang Paalen as well as Mexican artists Frida Kahlo and Gunther Gerszo.  After sev  ...  Displaying 750 of 1084 characters.
