Born in Sorby, von Saltza was the son of a count and became a portrait painter and teacher. He studied painting at the Royal Academy in Stockholm from 1878 to 1882, then at art academies in Brussels and in Paris. When he returned to Sweden in 1885, he became a part of the Opponents circle and was a friend and colleague of Anders Zorn, Bruno Liljefors, and Karl Nordstrom.
With his wife, son and daughter, he immigrated to St. Louis in 1891, where he headed the painting department at the school of the Museum of Fine Arts. From 1898 to 1899 he taught at the Art Institute of Chicago, and from there headed the painting department at Columbia University.
