He received two Gold Medals at the American Indian and Cowboy Artists Show in San Dimas, California.; the Peter Hassrick Merit Award, Helena, Mont.; Audubon Wildlife, Best of Show Award, Dubois, Wyo.; and the Nick Eggenhoffer Award in 1994. Mel is named in Who's Who in Art and Who's Who in the West.
