Born and baptized in Montreal, Canada, Pierre LeBer was known primarily for the decorative religious sculptures produced from his drawings but also for a posthumous portrait of Marguerite Bourgeoys, who died January 12, 1700. This work is the only painting authenticated as being done by LeBer. However, when the Bourgeoys painting was restored in 1963-1964, comparisons were made of his style to that of some unattributed paintings. These comparisons resulted in four oils on canvas, another portrait, and three paintings of religious subjects being credited to him. "There is good reason to assume that there are still other works in existence not known to have been painted by Pierre LeBer."
