I am writing a monograph concerning the KILAUEA VOLCANO CYCLORAMA (which appeared in Chicago in 1893, San Francisco in 1894, Boston in 1895, Buffalo 1901) and the LAYSAN ISLAND PANORAMA (at University of Iowa since before the World War). The family of Rev.Eli Corwin (1824-1899),missionary to Hawaii in the 1850s and 1860s, and his sons Charles Abel Corwin (artist),Cecil Sherman Corwin (architect) and Arthur Mills Corwin (M.D.)plays an important historic role in the background of the KILAUEA VOLCANO CYCLORAMA. Charles was the artist on a field trip to Laysan Island, and his cyclorama can be seen today at University of Iowa. I have much to share.

I am writing the first book about rotunda panoramas from the American point of view. These were the biggest paintings in the world, 50 x 400=20,000 sq.ft, housed in their own rotundas, which were 16 sided polygons.Charles Abel Corwin helped paint the Chicago Fire panorama for Reed & Gross, the Battle of Manila, Jerusalem on the Day of the Crucifixion, etc. I have much information to share.

Many of Charles Abel Corwin's diorama background paintings may be seen at the Field Museum in Chicago. References to his diorama painting may be found in Karen Wonders book titled Habitat Dioramas
