I bought a black and white portrait back in 1976. It is signed Wader 1881 and Geneva NY. Did he do portraits? Beautiful picture and would never sell.
C.D. Wader Painting I purchased recently.Rhondda Little
I've just purchased a WC painting by C.D. Wader. it is of an open field with a huge tree and a lone figure working. I did not know about this artist at all. I thought it reminded me of where I grew up. Imagine my surprise when I learned it was Canandaigua; I lived in Union Springs on Cayuga Lake as a child. I would be most interested to learn more.
Who is CD Wader?Laura Safayan
I was checking on the internet to see what I could find out about a watercolor I bought probably 20 years ago. The painting reminds me of Belgium where I lived for a while in my younger years. It is of a barge-like boat on a river with a town in the background. Thanks for the posts. I am glad to know something about the artist!

My mother grew up in the house that is now The Wood Library.
I have a mixed collection of Waders, Crandalls and Spencers. 11 paintings in total. All 3 give a different impression in different lighting. All of my collection is of lake views or surrounding landscape views. I would be glad to share photo's of these works.
I doubt that you will find these paintings in a book or catalog anywhere. I am sure that the Waders were transfered straight from CD Wader's hands to my Great Grandfather hands sometime before his death in 1917.

The Wood Library in Canandaigua recently held a Wader Exhibit with an impressive collection of his works. "He" had a studio on Main Street in Canandaigua (Frederick Daniel Crandall's Studio see http://www.askart.com/askart/c/frederick_d_crandall/frederick_d_crandall.aspx), the building still stands. I have had the privilege of spending a lot of time with Waders (which are watercolors). Many are now behind more protective glass, but I was always fascinated that the change in lighting conditions would result in subtle changes in the paintings. Notably, on a "dark and stormy" day the whitecaps on the waves seemed more pronounced.
I have heard Bear Owings tale and many of our first "Waders" came from my great grandfather who owned a Cafe not far from Wader's Studio. Both my father and grandfather collected "Waders" and I expect to do the same. I prefer the Canandaigua lake views to some of the country views, but I think that there are also some portraits. I don't know if Charles Dickens Wader used other media, but there are local specialists and collectors who may have studied Mr. Wader more extensively.
Dickens, may have been an appropriate middle name, it did not sound as if Mr. Wader had a happy life but the legacy of his paintings lives on in the City near the Lake where he did much of his work.

Can you shed any additional information on Charles Wader?
Charles Wader may have a monument/marker on a gravesite in Woodlawn but it doesn't mean that he was actually buried there.
I believe that a marker in his memory was placed on the family lot, but he was never interred there.

Our understanding of Wader's life was similar to his great-nephew's. We have a beautiful Wader of the house we're living in now from way back when.
place of Wader's burialBear
Woodlawn Cemetary on the north west side of town. When you drive in stay on the main loop to the right. When you come up the hill and it kind of flattens out his marker is on the right. It is very close to the road.
From what I know of Waders history bartering for all sorts of things was very common.

Can Bear Owings tell us where Wader's grave is located? Is it the large cemetery on the western side of Canandaigua?
Wader's need for housingBarbara
according to family tales Wader was given room and board by my grandfather and then paintings were given in exchange. The paintings I have are landscapes around Canandaigua Lake. He worked in a style a little like the Hudson River School

In response to Bruce Clark's comments about Wader selling his work for booze. I believe it to be true because I have several paintings that I inherited and was told the same story for many years.

I was looking at your information on Charles Dickens Wader. It said that he died in 1919. But actually he died Nov. 11th 1918 at age 69. I know this because I have a photo of his grave stone.
