Two 1932 portraits done in Hollywood
Helen Hinchliff (03/04/2012)
I have recently found two Warde Traver "portraits" of my great-grandparents painted in 1932. The paintings are beautifully done but they have been languishing unprotected in my mother's garage since 1973 and are sorely in need of restoration. It is very likely that Traver was a tenant of my grandfather's (Walter Swindell Davis) and that my grandfather commissioned him to paint them in lieu of rent, something Davis did with another starving artist during the 1930s. Almost certainly, Traver was living at the "French Village" on Cahuenga Blvd. and Highland Avenue in Hollywood, an apartment house Davis designed and built in about 1920. The portraits were painted from photographs (my mother still has the photographs). My great-grandfather died in 1921 and my great-grandmother was living in Baltimore in 1932. I had never heard of Warde Traver before, so I googled him and found your site among many others. I realize that we are lucky indeed to have these portraits and I only wish my mother had not neglected them so.

sweet Seventeen
Jerome Trexler (11/13/2011)
A Quick Update. The artwork I previously referred to as Phyllis matches a postcard by Warde named Pretty Lady "Sweet Seventeen". My piece has 13.25" X 17.5" visible. I am curious as to how many versions of these pieces may exist. She faces the left side of the frame and shows only from the neck up. Any input?

info about Charles Warde Traver
Robert Staiger , (Sweden) (04/02/2010)
We are by inheritance in possession of a oil in canvas paint 60 x 40 inches signed C. Ward Traver 1907. It illustrates a young beautiful woman in a wonderful gown and in the upper corner a heraldry shield. Both refer to an ancestor of our family tree. The painting is apparently from Charles time at the Royal Academy of Munich. The painting is slightly damaged at the upper rim. However the young lady is intact. The above information might be of interest to all amateurs of Charles and I welcome any comments you might have. \Robert Staiger robertstaiger@telia.com

FWIW, my father's portrait, done by Warde Traver, has the following hand-written inscription on the back: "Walter Walden Portrait Sketch from life at my Hotel Cass Studio in August 1936. Warde Painting
Linda (03/08/2007)
I found an old painting on canvas with the name of Warde on the bottom. The painting looks like possibly an army barracks with the main building being a home that a higher ranked officer would live in. It is in horrible shape but still wonder if it was by anyone famous.

Peggy McQuaid (03/12/2004)
I have in my possession a painting done by Warde Traver, or at least that's the inscription on the painting. It is of a lady done in profile, mostly of the head, but some upper body. My father gave it to me and he said it came out of a Railway Station in Alberton, Prince Edward Island, Canada back in the early 1920's. Is anyone familiar with this painting? Is there any value to it? Thanks for any information.
