Family Peale?? portraits from 1700'sScott
Our family has passed down, over the last 300 years, an oil portrait of our ancestor, David Foreman....Monmouth County, NJ, a farmer. This is a large full body portrait. There is a matching portrait of his wife. We have been told they are Peale portraits. It almost looks as if the bodies had been painted in advance, and the faces painted after the fact. Others have tole us they were probably by an itinerant painter. The portratits do resemble the paintings we have seen at the museum in Sandwich, MA.
1. There were many Peale's. Is there any way to ascertain whether these 1700 portraits were by a Peale, and which one?
2. Not that they are being sold, but they are hanging on our wall, as they have for centuries. Does anyone have any idea of their value, if indeed they are a Peale portrait?
