Family memories
Rosemary Cusack Speciale (08/14/2011)
My family lived down the street from the Foley family in Manhasset, NY, during the late 60's & early 70's. It was a wonderful and charmed life then. Mrs. Foley for awhile did paintings of homes in our neighborhood. I remember being facinated quietly watching her at work. She'd act as if she didn't know I was there. She'd be wearing a caftan and a hat sitting at an easel across the street from her subject. She and my mom were good pals for a good number of years. She gave me a painting as a wedding gift in 1970 entitled "Old Shelter Rock Road to Strathmore Vanderbilt - 1962" I realize that this painting will soon be 50! If there are any Foleys out there who happen to read this - hello. Please know how much I have cherished this gift and that it has hung - always - in my living room. The painting is of a section of Old Shelter Rock Road that was the roadway leading into our neighborhood. We all must have walked, biked, driven this road many thousands of times going to and from school, church and town. The road was narrow and winding with a high crown. When it was rainy or snowy you had to walk right in the middle or slip and slide right off it. It led to the archway to Country Club Drive. It was the road where you always knew you were almost home. Thank you.

If Jane Cartwright reads this: I was a full-time sitter/au pair for the Foley children...David was recently deceased, and I remember the anguish of your aunt at times. She was gifted...the Capt was very gentle and sweet...and I can remember the love they showed each other. If she is still living, please give her my warmest regards. Joan R.

I am writing a biography of Tonsk & his pupils & Cornelia may be one of his last pupils still alive. I would love to know what she thought of Tonsk & her time at the Slade.
