Hader and Steinbeck
Steve Hauk (09/08/2011)
We sometimes just get part of the story. Although his work has not gone for that much money, Elmer Hader's art has been seen by millions of people – he illustrated the 1939 cover of John Steinbeck's ``The Grapes of Wrath.'' The image of the Joad Family getting their first look at California, peering over a long valley to the mountains in the distance, was seared into the nation's consciousness. Several years back the original art for the cover sold at auction for over $60,000. Hader also created the cover art for the first edition of Steinbeck's ``The Long Valley'' and ``East of Eden'' in 1952 and ``The Winter of Our Discontent'' in 1961. Steinbeck became interested in Hader's work after seeing a children's book cover by him. Hader and his wife Berta collaborated on children's books after their only child died. Eventually they won the prestigious Cadlecott Medal. Incidentally, Steinbeck and Hader both came from California's Monterey County, Steinbeck from Salinas, Hader from Pajaro.
