Eric Sloane "Nostalgic Summer"
Jack DeStories (04/11/2009)
Pictures with brass plaques reading "Nostalgic Summer" are almost certainly prints mounted to cardboard backings and of nominal value only. Authentic Sloane paintings are almost always found painted on masonite. He often titled works and often signed the reverse as well. If you are still unsure I'd recommend contacting an expert in the field, gallery or auctioneer and have a few good pictures available to forward by email.

I am trying to find out more about an item I have by Eric Sloane. Brass name plate at the bottom says "Nostologic Autumn" It is signed by Mr. Sloane. it seems as if it is on a hard surface, attached to a cardborad backing. It feels as if it is an oil painting (maybe on masonite) but not sure. A wood frame surrounds painting, but it could easily be poppped out. How do I go about continuing my reasearch on this item. I believe that the painting came into my family in the late 1960's. appreciate any help

Eric Sloane "Duck Blind"
John Glynn (10/22/2008)
I am trying to sort out the value of an original (signed lower right) oil on masonite, 17.5 x 23.5, w/original frame. It's entitled "Duck Blind" and dates to the mid-50s. The frame says "Roslyn, NY" on the back. Any input would be most appreciated.

Knew him well!
jim Perkins (09/29/2008)
I knew Eric very well. He might have been born into a " well to do" family in NY however he wasn't happy living with them. He left home at 14 yrs. old and worked his way across the country by painting signs for people. He might have died in NYC but he was living in the town that he loved at the time and that was Warren, Conn. Warren is also my hometown. Eric died in NYC but was only there for a day or two. He liked to go down for a show from time to time and to enjoy fine dinning. He die after just finishing a fine steak dinner. He loved Warren, Conn. and it's people and they loved him! He did a great deal for the town of Warren! I spent many hours watching him paint and helped him build one of his studios. We named our son after Eric. Best, Jim Perkins

Eric Sloane Tin Lithograph
Denny Hatch (06/12/2006)
I own a copy of Eric Sloane's tin print, "A COMPLETE MAP FOR PILOTS SHOWING LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK AND ALL NEARBY PASTURES FOR FLYING MACHINES" In the middle at the bottom it notes: SOCKED INTO METAL FOR: MILES VERNON " BY THE OLD METAL SOCKER" ERIC SLOANE 1937 Vernon was an old family friend who owned a Waco biplane with black body and yellow wings. Flew out of the Aviation Country Club, Hicksville, NY. My guess is that Sloane either sold subscriptions for this piece and then created it. Vernon's little plane is shown with his name. Now mabye Sloane created the print and personalized it afterwards. I do not know the technique he used to create it or the number of prints. Vernon used to say, "There are two kinds of pilots: good pilots and dead pilots."

"Nostalgic Summer" by Eric Sloane
Laura Swett (02/23/2002)
I'm wondering if someone here can point me in the right direction. My aunt has a beautiful covered bridge scene with a young boy and girl; fishing poles in hand, and a small black dog running behind. In the background is a barn a church steeple peeking through the treetops as well as a few houses. It's titled "Nostalgic Summer" and looks like nearby Cornwall Bridge in Cornwall CT. I live in Warren, as did Eric for a period of time. I have been unable to locate this image on the internet and my aunt has asked for help. I have looked through several websites including the Sloane Stanley Museum etc. It measures about 30X52 and features his sig. I'm not sure if this is what they call "oil on board" or not. I'm unfortunately a bit unaware to these matters. Kindly let me know if you can be of any assistance. Thanks!

Thomas Clay (02/06/2002)
I've loved Sloane for years and have always been curious as to what happened to all the original black and white illustrations that fill his books. Are they on exhibit somewhere? Are there any for sale? Thanks for the info!
