How do I find the value of a G Whitman painting that my parents watched hom paint in 1949 or 1950?
Oil painting by WhitmanA. Edwards
Whitman oil painting. I have a 36 inch by 24 inch oil painting signed Whitman with a large T at the bottom left hand corner in white. The painting has mountain peaks with mist rolling down, it has what appears to be a bending river surrounded by rocks and pine/fir trees. The coloring is greens browns and blues. I purchased this picture about 30 years ago. On the back of the canvas it has this is an original work of art unlawful to copy stamped on the canvas and a number E5071 49 with ww on the left and AI on the right. Could anyone give me any information about this painting as I have been unable to find anything out so far. I was once told that it could be a painting of somewhere in the state of New York but i cannot be sure.
G Whitman oil paintingchelas
I also have a 24" x 48" oil painting by G Whitman. I received it from an art restorer who passed away.
It is quite unique because it has no mountain. The mountain is covered by clouds. The trees are old and decrepit but they are painted so marvelously, like they are sculpted out of the paint rather than painted. The texture is outstanding!
The man who painted this painting did so with passion, and his signature blends into the painting rather than standing out in black like the knock off's do.
The signature is on the left, bottom corner. The signature is as much an art as the trees.
The painting is old, it is in marvelous condition, but the paint is cracking due to its age.
If anyone is interested in seeing pics, e-mail me.
Whitman is worthMark Johnson
Not much, I am afraid. When AskArt says his authenticity is questionable and several posters say the name was used by several painters working for a mill, the art is essentially valueless. The goodwill auction has one now for bid. They usually bid out for 5 to 15 dollars. The guy is either 150 years old (there are too many recently painted G. Whitman's for this guy to have been active early part of 20th Century), or he is a fraud. mark
I have bought and sold many, many Whitman paintings in the last couple of years. Average cost about $75. Read the comments from Robert Cabrera; he is exactly correct.
The Whitman stuff is nice production art, created by a number of people under the same name working for Artistic Interiors.
It's nice to look at, but not valuable art.

I have a painting signed G.WhiTman 20x24(approx.)with 2 other signatures on the canvas-Jenny Moore,& Bev Moore w/instructions to stretch only;Interesting comments here about this artist-in my research, there was a G.WhiTman & Bev Moore was his wife-this leads me to believe I do have an original oil by this artist. It is in oranges,a winter scene,w/stream trees snow along the banks & sunset;I have a photo of it if anyone is interested,or can add more info on this work.Thank You.
G Whitman paintingsrobert cabrera
I have investigated this artist work and have found that many many of his painting were handled and sold by Artistic Interiors Inc which was an art mill painting factory that mass produced original oil painings to be sold at department stores, touist locations, interior ladies sales , TV and exported many were framed in bulk in cheap frames bought in Mexico and are so stamped. So Here is the BIG QUESTION YOU HAVE BEEN ASKING WHO IS G WHITMAN Well acording to information from Artistic interiors all painting were painted by unknown artist who were not allowed to use their names all the art sold by Artistic Interiors had to be sold under a made up name The sold many different artist work all under fictaous names Work that sold well was reproduced at painting mill fashion and although some artist were talanted and painted nice oils these were not works of art but simply home decorations and sold over 8000 copies of G whitmans That is the true story of G whitman that nis why no one can find out birth info or painting background He or she very well could have been a street artist or one of those mexican felt oil painting artist that reproduce the same bullfighting oil painting 500 times for tourist. So look as you will you will not find a G whitman he does not exist as that person maybe if Artistic interiors wanted to devuge the name of the artist using the name G whitman they could however dont know if they will.
Her is the certfication number for a G whitman oil paining from artistic interiors so you can verify all I have posted
Cert#636742 Hope this helps some body thanks RC

I also have painting that was handed down to me. It is stamped an original, numbered too, from the Frankenmuth Gallery in Frankenmuth, MI. There is a typed note explaining the artist was born in 1909 in Australia then relocated to Bavaria.
Now, knowing a little about Frankenmuth, MI, I have little confidence that this painting is anything more than a beautiful picture created to scam someone for a lot of money while visiting a quaint little tourist trap. Sorry, although the painting is wonderful, I doubt the value is anymore than the cost of the frame.
In about 1975 my mother purchased a large G. Whitman painting of the Grand Tetons for $100. at the Kern County fair in Bakersfield CA. We still have it. I was very young at the time but I remember her talking to the artist who had a number of paintings displayed for sale as he worked on another.
H. Whitman paintingsara
I recently purchased a beautiful landscape painting that I would love more information on. It is approx. 12" x 24". It is oil on canvas and appears to be fairly old. It is also a scene of very calm water with treed banks on either side and distant (bluish) trees in the background (no mountains). It is done in very unusual and intense golden green tones that remind me of the light conditions right before a nasty storm hits. The foreground features are of thick paint textures on the nearest tree bark and the impression of many miles depth is truly flawless. The talent behind this painting is impressive and I can not walk past without stopping and just "feeling it" for a moment. I have not found a single internet listing for an H. Whitman but this site seems fairly popular. I have no interest in selling this item but I would love anything on the artist and whether or not I sould get it appraised for security.
what kind of work is this?Connie Hanson
I have a oil painting by Gomez,on this painting there is like real painted bark on the tree. What kind of work is this called?

I have a oil painting of Robert Wood signed it called Pine and Birch i was baught with green stampes years ago dose anyone know about this picture and is it worth anything
I have a g whitman painting, bought 30 years ago in england. It has the usual river surrounded by trees on either side with a mountainous background with autuminal colours.Size 36inchx24inch.Feedback of any kind about this man/woman would be appreciated.thank you.
Tom and Shawn, thankyou to you both, you are both correct.
I too have been studying this artist for some time and have discovered several versions of the same picture, with differing signatures. I have noted at least 4.
I picked up my copy here in Australia and recently saw a nearly exact copy on ebay, only 3 weeks ago. I thought I was dreaming to see my painting for sale.
A friend in the US did some in depth research, and found that these pictures were sold at tourist venues and airports by struggling artists in the 60's and 70's.
I completely agree that some people are paying or asking astronomical prices. I only paid $10 AUD. And believe me I enjoy my painting very much. It is not the value that is appealing, but the picture itself.
tom conant (03/18/2010)
Actually there are two g. whitman's listed on AskArt. Askart does not usually edit submissions. They have a dynamic data base because artists are submitted by subscribers. O.K. to start, go to Google search and type the following: "g. whitman" painting - make sure you include the quotes. You should get about 7,780 hits. Next, look up "g. whitman" artist - over 5000 hits (many, but not all, of which overlap the first search; then search "g. whitman" paintings again most overlap but some don't - now you see why it took two weeks! I noted each unique entry from these 3 searches (crazy huh - maybe I was hallucinating)
Greg Lorenzo (03/17/2010)
Ok mr conant so why is he a listed artist right here at Ask Art. I really doubt there are nearly 9000 paintings all of Mt Carmel. So it took you 2 weeks to find just under 9000 hits not bad if you ask me. Are you sure you werent hallucinating. I'd also like to know why Artistic Interiors don't have any record of G.Whitman. So you're also saying Ask Art is wrong and you are right. I'd still like to believe there is a G.Whitman out there,
tom conant (03/15/2010)
been in bed with H1N1 the last couple of weeks and because I was bored I did an exhaustive search for g whitman paintings. guess what? I found 8,753 distinct hits of people claiming to own this artist .. let's put this to rest shall we "g whitman is a moniker used in some art factory somewhere. You may like your paintings but your painting was done by an artisan someone (most seem to have been painted in the 50's and 60's) No artist I can think of has painted 8000 paintings!

I bought my first oil painting, a 20x24, G. Whitman in the early '70's. Iloved it!
The manager at the art store I I bought it from said it was the only picture Whitman painted with a pheasant in it so it might be worth more someday. It has beautiful fall colors, trees, a river and sunset with a pheasant in the foreground. Can anyone tell me the approximate value?

i too know of a painting with the signature of "Whitman" in the lower right hand corner. It is a beautiful scene of trees, waterfalls and mountains all rolled into one. I believe it may also be an oil painting that could be as old as 40 years plus. If anyone can help shed light on this person it would be most helpful!!! thanks
G WhiTman oil paintingJackie Zook
I recently purchased at auction an oil painting signed in lower right corner by G WhiTman. It has mountains in background, 2 small lakes in center separated by small area of rocks, tall trees on right side, and smaller trees on left side. Beautiful frame. Interested in comments, authenticity, etc.
painting by whitmanchan
i have a painting with signature by "whitman". note-- no initial as per typical g. whitman paintings. the painting is approx. 2ft. by 3ft. of a typical g. whitman painting of aaa scene with a snow capped mountain. there are trees on either side and a beautiful stream down the middle. there is no cabin as mentioned in many descriptions of other g, whitman paintings. also, there is no large "T" as is often mentioned. does anyone have anything they might know about any similar work?. I would appreciate hearing from you. sincerely, chan
I have to say that I am a very proud owner of a whiTeman painting, signed at the bottom right side patially in the stream, it appears to be spring with little snow on the backround mountain. Seems like this very talented man slept with a paintbrush in his hand as there are many of his paintings out there. It would be great to get a web site gallery of all his work. Have seen alot of his images scattered around different websites and I do like what I see, most with simmilar settings, river, trees and the mountain peak in the backround. There has been talk of paintings containing a shack, my guess is that he lived in this location and painted this similar scene all seasons round. I must add that I live in Australia so the painting has traveled a great distance from what looks like a Canadian location and is proudly hanging on my lounge room wall giving me great satisfaction. The signiture contains a large T with the w having no curves(boxy)and you could say the rest of the letters are of capital format. I hope that all that have one of his paintings are as proud owners as I am. If anyone would like to start a collection of his work I would be happy to provide a photo of my painting. May all enjoy his work.
Thank you from the down under.

I HAVE LOOKED AND LOOKED ON HERE AND HAVE FOUND MANY PEOPLE WHO HAVE WHITMAN PAINTINGS,MY MOTHER IS TRYING TO FIND OUT THE WORTH OF THE PAINTINGS THAT SHE HAS IN HER HOME. SHE IS THE ORIGINAL OWNERS AND HAD PURCHSED THEM BACK IN 1975-1976 IN LAS VEGAS HOTEL WHICH IS NO LONGER OPEN. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THESE PAINTINGS AND EVERYONE ELSES IS THESE ARE ALL PAINTED IN SOLID REDS AND 2 IN BLUE, I BELIEVE ONE IS A PROMARD BUT THERE IS NO INFO WHAT SO EVER ON PROMARD. THESE PAINTINGS ARE BREATH TAKING WHEN A LIGHT IS PLACED ON THEM AND ALL THE COLORS OF RED COME OUT. I HAVE YET TODAY SEEN ANYONE PAINT A MOUNTAIN SCEANERY ALL IN RED OR BLUE IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE SHE PAID 500.00 BACK THEN AND CANNOT REMEMBER WHAT THE STORY WAS TO WHY HE HAD PAINTED THESE PICTURES IN THESE COLORS. IF ANY ONE HAS ANY INFO PLEASE CONTACT ME AT firstname.lastname@example.org thanks april

I have tried to locate some information from the SRAofArts when they get back to me ill keep you all posted. The mystery of this fantastic artist continues......

New information on G.WhitmanRebecca Parker
I have some new credible information which may shed some light on this artist. A painting of Whitman's for sale on ebay has a typed info sheet stuck to the back, along with a authenticity certificate.
It states that: "Gordon Whitman was born in Michigan in 1945. He studied art in London, Rome and Madrid. Although his Landscapes reflect a basic traditional style, his strong colours give visual impact and a strong intensity to his canvas. His paintings seem to have their own source of light, and the intricate detail of his trees, lakes and mountains have made Whitman one of our poplar artists today. One of his landscapes was recently purchased for the private White House collection. At present, Whitman lives and works on Ibiza, an island off the coast of Spain."
It goes on to explain about a few exhibitions and prizes he has won. The dates do not go past 1970, so I assume this is when the info sheet was typed.
Hope this helps. Rebecca
As per my stated opinions of G Whitman. which include concerns about (1)The signature sample, which is clearly modern, not 1928, (2) the photo example of G Whitman's work posted on Askart, which is an inferior quality painting, to say the least, and (3)the fact the G Whitman is a common name, and I believe the posters here have been mixing up different artists, one who is a mass production decorative type artist ....
Regarding G Whitman .....I somewhat agree with Tom Conant's comment of 4/14/09. The G. Whitman listed in Edan Hughes book (which I own) is not the same G Whitman of all of these paintings talked about on this Discussion page. I have seen examples of G Whitman's work for sale on eBay. They are clearly much more modern, "Mass Production" or "Assembly Line" pieces of art by an artist with the same name. G Whitman being a common name.
I'm sorry to disappoint the people on this discussion page but you are collecting very low quality, mass production, paintings by a G. Whitman that are of little value. They are decorative pieces, not fine art, that are sold in Department stores or places like Aaron Brothers Art Marts.
Part of my suspictions are that there are so many posts here. Edan Hughes, one of the leading expert in CA Art whom I have had email found almost no information about the 1928 Carmel G Whitman. This leads me also to believe most of your paintings are mixed up between different people.

G'day all, I am a proud owner of a G.Whitman painting, but am putting together a catalogue of his other works.
So far I have photos of 56 paintings, all of which I got from the internet.
But I'm sure there are more paintings out there which I don't have.
I would really appreciate any photos of G.Whitman paintings to add to my collection.
If I get enough, I am looking to post the catlogue on the web for all to see.
Thanks everyone, Rebecca.
Original oil painting by G. WhitmanBarbara Haumann
I have just purchased an original oil painting by G. Whitman from Goodwill. His signature is the similar G. with the "Whi" being small and the "T" pronounced. The painting displays a stream between birch trees on either side in the Spring or Summer, as everything is green. It flows toward an island of two trees and a golden sunset, also reflected in the stream. The painting is just wonderful; it draws you in to it's peaceful scene. I am truly excited to find so many others that are interested in this artist's works and have also been exploring his identity and other paintings. I will keep in touch with this site and submit any further information that I can find.

g WhiTmanShawn Wardlow
I have bought and sold several of his\her paintings. I've seen the posts that say he went to art school in Michigan etc. The fact is there is no clear information on G WhiTman. That most paintings seem to depict scenes in or around Carmel is clear. I did find some information that seems to indicate possible employment for a production art studio which furnished "home decoration art". That would make sense given that the vast majority of the G Whitman paintings show basically the same scene (a cabin with trees and mountain in the background). The style and quality of the ones I have owed clearly show they were painted by the same artist, but I suppose it's possible given the very large number of G WhiTman's out there that someone else may have painted under that name as well. Bottom line, the paintings are of nice quality, show basically the same scene and there are a ton of them out there (so they are not going to be worth a lot of money)(I've bought mine for an average of $40 each). But if you're looking for a decent landscape, these are nice paintings, well textured and worth hanging - Shawn

G'day i bought a couple of oil paintings from an op shop for about $20 10 or more years ago. 24ins X 12ins wide North American scene trees snow and a stream in the bottom right hand corner of one of them. No mountains or house and although obviously by the same artist only one is signed G WhiTman so i guess they were meant to be displayed as a pair. Any info would be greatly appreciated

did some searching. g. whitman paintings appear to follow the pattern of an urban legend. "facts" layered on "facts" but many contradictions. seems to be hundreds of notices of these paintings found all around the world! what does that tell you? perhaps g. whitman paintings are the result of a very resourceful and talented group of artisans who have put these on the market. but..couldn't find anyone who has come out and said as much.. just a thought
Does anybody know history of g.whiteman. Where he lives, date of first painting ect.

I recently purchased a G.Whitman painting, which I can only call an 'autumn scene'.
It depicts a mountain in the background and, cabin and stream in the middle / foreground. It is painted in oil and on board rather than canvas. The colours are browns and generally earthy tones.
I would appreciate any information.
Hi, I'd like any and all information available on G. Whitman and his artwork value and authenticity, if possible.
I have a G Whitman oil canvas painting which my husband purchased 38years ago for the price $350. The actual painting itself measures 117cm x 58cm which has 2 snow capped mountains it has a beautiful sunset in bright oranges fading to a peach colour and blues, the lake has a beautiful reflection on it from the sunset in beautiful yellows and oranges. On both sides of the water has ? birch trees -- the bark on the trees to touch is very thick almost like it is bark. The signature is in the left hand corner which is hand written in capitals and the top of the T start from the W and runs through to the A.
Sorry to the people who have emailed me about photos... I lost a hard drive a while back and have not taken any new pics... I ask everyone to be patient... Rickey Hall I dod like the pictures you sent but for some reason i can't reply to your emails? Thanks again everyone... It's neat to read everyones post about their paintings.

Bob Whitman oil paintingLY
Has anyone heard of Bob Whitman..I have an orginal oil on canvas signed Bob whitman but cant find anyting on him..I found some stuff on Robert Whitman. This is a landscape and barn type painting..Any info would be appreciated
Here's something interesting, if not necessarily useful:
On the bottom edge of the canvas of my WhiTman (as in, at the back where the staples are) is a slightly longer flap with the following rewritten in ballpoint pen:
Per Irene Baker
The 'Per Manager' leads me to believe that this painting was purchased from a gallery for an office of some sort by a lackey per the boss' instruction in November 1977.
So another useful bit: Whitman art was not just home-fill, but displayed and purchased in some variety.
G WHITMANDan Cain
I found a Painting that someone threw away in a pile of pallets that was going to be used for bonfire night here in manchester England, Being a Artist i noticed it was signed G Whitman and the T was bigger than the rest of the signature and the H at first glance looked to be a N but later realised it was a H. The painting is about 5 foot by 2 foot in a lovely frame, The scene is a mountain covered in snow with a stream in the fore ground and lovely birch or aspen trees. Am i dreaming or is this real and how much would it be worth if it is real?? thanks Dan Cain(abstract) artist,,,

The canvas measures, (47" W x 23"H) the framing measures 56"W x 32"H.This painting is very unique in the fact that when you look at the mountain you can see, the mountain is actualy a face of a man that has a well grown mustache and balding hair that feathers off into the forest scenary.
If you are interested in viewing the painting.feel free to send me an email>
thank you for your time and hope i was of some help to you and other WHITMAN collecters'

I also have a G whiTman oil painting left to me by my father. he got it several years ago from an old mill he was tearing down in charlotte nc area, mine is also the mountain and two lakes scene, but mine is defanitly an autumn scene portraying the colors of fall foliage mostly done in golds and yellows 24x36 in size and framed in a very ornate gold frame. signed in lower left corner in all capital letters with a bigger T , auction # on the back is 166321. I dont know if these paintings are valuable but it is the most beautiful painting ive ever seen. The painter was extremely talented and put great effort into the detail. it does not look like a mass produced painting. I also would love more info if any one finds more. thanks jody

My husband acquired his 'Whitman' painting some years ago now from an elderly man who was going to throw it out anyway. My husband is a painter and decorator and the man said ok you can have it seeing you like it. The canvas painting measures 36" X 24 was a bit dusty when we got it but came up a treat when we had it cleaned by a professional art person. Believe it is 'Lake Louise' in Canada - beautiful rustic/golden autumn colours and we enjoy it just as much as when we first saw it. Got it valued a couple of years ago from an expert. She said it was worth about £400 (we live in Scotland)but apparently the price of a 'Whitman' can fluctuate - in any case we love it so much - would have to be in dire need of cash before we would part from such a beautiful painting. Apparently Whitman's speciality is the way he paints a particular scene in different tones of the same colour. The expert also mentioned one she had seen called "The Blue Room" which she especially liked. The only downside at the moment is the fact that we occasionally cat-sit out daughter's cat and our 'Whitman' has to be carefully stored away in a 'safe' place. Ah well!
Also, at the time we had been talking with the art expert, she mentioned that the artist himself is in his 90's now and still painting too.
Why can`t we allmick cook
I am finding it increasingly difficult to gather any information about the artist, and would love to know more. Thankyou..

I also have a G WHITMAN landscape painting. It is very well painted in the impressionist style. I love the way he has applied the paint with a pallet knife in the foreground. This has been done very skillfully. The background has smokey grey/blue mountains, and the water of the stream which meanders from the background to the foreground is also painted extremely well. The signature is in the bottom right hand corner and is in upper case print with the capital T in his name a dominant letter. I have had this picture for 35 years and still see new things in it every time I look at it. I will never part with it as I enjoy it too much. Personally I don't care how much it is worth. To me it is irreplaceable and a constant and ongoing joy.
I just purchased a painting at a garage sale. It was originally purchased in the early to mid seventies, in San Diego California. It is approximately 48" X 24" and is signed in the right hand corner WHItMAN. It has a beautiful, jagged, rock like mountain in the background with snow in the crevases. There are beautiful pine trees on both sides and other trees too, and at the base of the mountain is a small cabin with smoke coming out of the chimney with snow on the ground. This is in the middle of the picture. Up front in the middle, is a small stream with rocks, possibly frozen, (In tans and browns) and a part of a wooden fence. We would like to know if this WHItMAN could possibly be a G. Whitman.
would you please let me know...is this "Georga" or "george"?sidney keller
I am interested in knowing the difference in the painter "G.Whitman" with the big "T" or "george Whitman" or "Georga Whitman". This is very confusing. Which one is correct. I have a large painting by "G.Whitman" with the large "T" and I am still trying to find out which one I am writing about. the painting is roughly 36" x 24" in size and is of a stream with a forest in the backround. the stream is in the forground. Please help me firgure out which painter I have?
I "bought" a small 8"X10" Painting for $1.00 at a yard sale.It is a lovely painting described much as the ones in the posts I've read here.It is a beautiful scene of trees in autumn colors a stream or body of water with mountains in the background that appear to be snow capped, and there are many beautiful hues of oranges, browns& yellows, with the background in mostly blue hues. There is a pink hue to the sky & on the left of the mountain. It has many beautiful textures & is wonderfully 3D looking as if you could walk off into the scene.I could go on & on with my description because there is such detail & depth. It amazes me that kind of depth can be found in a painting so small! It is signed on the Right,GWHITMAN,It is painted on canvas that appears to have been permanently bonded/ mounted on a thin piece of board. Can anyone tell me anything at all about it, as I'm not finding much info about GWhitman in my searches online,None of the info I've found can be validated, because no sources are listed. Thanks for your help!

I have had a oil painting by g Whitman, and I want to know more about the artist.
Upon my friends mother's death, I was given 3 oil paintings one 24 x 36 horizontal landscape with two matching small 8 x 10's all framed in 3" maple corded frame. The frames do have two finishing nails one on either side to secure the The two small oils are stored away for now,but the 24 x 36 is of a woodland landscape: Peach sunset, teal hues to evening sky, richly textured pine, cedar, birch, and hemlock trees, framing a brook which appears to lead to a hazy lake in the background. The artist signiture is in the bottom left all printed, all Capitals all though the middle T is somewhat larger than the other letters. This artists command of texture is phenominal. I love these pieces of art, and am not concerned with the monitary value to other, as the value to me is priceless, and isn't that what art is all about? Thanks for sharing everyone.
I have what seems to be a rarity for a G. Whitman painting. A scene with trees and a stream but NO mountain in the background; also, it is a vertical painting rather than horizontal. The canvas is 12” wide X 16” high.
Currently there are eight G. Whitman paintings on eBay ranging in price from $95 for a small canvas up to, in my opinion, an over priced $1150 medium size canvas. My guess is these paintings are worth $150-$1000.
A very reputable high-end Art Gallery in Grosse Pointe Michigan is selling a 28 X 24 painting on eBay for $950; seeing as it’s a gallery I’d say it’s slightly over priced and maybe should sell in the $500-$750 range. This Gallery claims G. Whitman is “Believed to have been born in 1932 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Whitman attended the University of Michigan, where he was an Art major.” I tend to believe them.
Anyone else out there have a vertical painting? Or one without the mountain back ground?
I found G. Whitman is vary callected and well liked. IF you look around on the web you will see his paintings sell for little to a great deal of money. But the average seams to be $500 to $600 depending on the size of the painting. It comes down to how much are you willing to sell your painting for or how much are you willing to pay for a graet artist like G.Whitman.
Thanks Michael. I can't say that I have very much knowledge of the art world. I do however remember that fuzzy doode kicked canvas.
G. whitmanJim Tedford
If found a G whitMan in a Plano, TX thrift store. I got so excited after seeing all of your posts, I paid $32 even though the frame is badly water stained. This painting is 24x36 and the signature is written in the lower left hand column. The first initial is a capital G, even though if you did not look closely it could be interpreted as a small g. In the last name the M could be interpreted as a capital letter because it is the biggest letter but the w and t are definitely both small letters. The signature is in cursive (not printed).
Surprise, my painting doesn't have a mountain, just trees and the cove of a lake or maybe a stream. I believe it is a sunset. There is lots of orange. The tree trucks have a lot of black, which makes them stand out. The stretcher frame of the canvas was nailed to picture frame. This was the first time I have seen this mounting technique.
I like it, of course.
I have e-mailed George Whitman at the University of Richmond's Department of Art and Art History. Maybe he will know something about G. whiTman.

It seem's I have a G. Whitman oil painting and I just looked him up on the net. Is this the guy from the old tv show with the fuzzy hair, that taught how too? The guy that would put out a new painting in the half hour show that was just amazing? Anyone know?
In need of professional critiqueGregory
Has anyone thought of actually getting a professional critic to view these paintings without knowing about all the mystery and details of the artist. An unbias review relying on form, brush strokes and a professional eye. It's driving me crazy all these different values as i have now purchased 8 paintings by G.Whitman. This forum has many different biographies of this man or woman, saying he was born in 1944,1938,1935. Yet in the ask art listing he was an active artist in 1928. So therefore it makes sense to say he was probably born in the 1800's.
Linda Talley makes a good point, the artist could easily have been a female no one knows for sure. Why is it so hard to find information on an artist who's paintings have been found worldwide. A listed artist with such a small amount of information. Why be listed if so insignificant.
So i doubt very much the artist in which the Joel & Lila Harnett Museum of Art is the person were talking about as he was born in 1944 and is still alive.
Lets hope someone can put me out of my misery as this is driving me insane!!!!!

Info on G. WhitmanAllison
This is what I found after doing some research:
According to a website,
the Joel and Lila Harnett Museum of Art is doing an exhibition of his work from March 28 to June 6, 2008.
More than forty graphite drawings and etchings are featured in this mini-retrospective of art by contemporary artist George Whitman (American, born 1944). Included in the exhibition are meticulously drawn works depicting a fantastical view of nature, where birds, insects, and animals exist in a primordial landscape. The artist is an adjunct assistant professor of art in the University of Richmond's Department of Art and Art History.

My parents bought a whitman painting in the 1960's from a gallery in NYC for 60.00 marked down from 120.00. I still have it and it hangs in my house because it is nice to look at and it reminds me of them.
Guess I won't be bringing it to the Antiques Roadshow.
If you have one enjoy it.
On These Supposed Overtly Priced Whitman PaintingsLinda Talley
Could any of the people who say they have "paid $10,000 for a G. Whitman painting" please send me some sort of proof that this has actually occurred? So far, I have received a good number of messages from people stating that "they know someone who just paid $10,000 for a Whitman painting," yet, as of yet, not one has been able to produce any proof that this has actually occurred. It would help my research a good deal to be able to prove such price aberrations are real. I'm not saying that it couldn't happen, but it would be an aberration, indeed, for an artist whose work is readily available any day of the week for less than $50- $100 to sell at such amazing price extremes. (Were people saying that they paid $1200 or $1500, or prices more like that, I might be more believing, but $10,000 and more? I just bought a very nice, unique one for under $15!) If you can send any genuine proof of such a purchase, that would be more than terrific, it would answer a question that is beginning to eat away at my nights. Also, I would LOVE to have a photo of one of these high-valued paintings, as well. I have gotten a lot of inquiries from people wanting to see what one of these paintings actually looks like, why they are worth $10,000 and yet their painting only $25? At this time, I have nothing to share. I can point them to places were such paintings are being sold, but that is a very- VERY- different thing from being purchased. I've still seen no real proof that anyone ever paid such high prices for a G. Whitman painting. (I know, I know. Someone here said that she DID pay such a price, but please note, this person failed to leave any contact information so that we could ask her about this, so how do any of us know the story is real? Heck, how do we even know SHE is real?) Of course, I am not saying that there are not some extremely beautiful G. Whitman paintings. If there weren't, we wouldn't have so many questions about the artist. I worry that these supposed $10,000 paintings, if real, may actually be by a different artist altogether than the one who flooded the market. We just do not know- yet. At this time, though, the idea that anyone has paid overt prices for a Whitman painting appears to be nothing more than hearsay, perhaps no more harmful than an urban myth. Or perhaps we are seeing something more nefarious? The honest answer certainly could enhance all our research a good deal. We should be concerned about the possibility that someone may have intentionally set out to create the impression of a higher market value, just to create interest in his or her own low-to-medium valued art. If you can honestly shed any light on these questions, I know I'd personally be dearly indebted to you for the help in learning otherwise. Please feel free to email me anytime. (I you emailed me before and did not get a response, I had a problem with my server, but that has now been resolved. Oh, and I am still collecting photos, if you care to send them!)
Thanks for all the endless help!
I have two by him, one small one and one larger one, numbered on the back is #1 and #2 same scene, but cabin on right side and one on lef side. Small pond and larger lake and snow capped mountain's in background. Anyone know anything about them can contect me at my email address. Thank you

G. Whitman with elegant frame
Found a little treasure in a resale shop in Lake Geneva, WI. I paid $8.00 for it. It is wonderfully framed and has a lovely scene similar to those described in this message board. It has great texture and light. The scene is of the changing leaves of birch trees and a snow capped peak in the background. It reminds me of Mt. Chocorua in New Hampshire. I could not understand why someone would not have wanted this painting.
My G. Whitman painting sounds like everyone else's with landscape, trees, snowcapped mountains and stream. But G. Whitman is signed on the right bottom corner. What's up with that?

The location in G Whitman's paintings you mention is Cadillac Mount, in Bar Harbor, Maine. I have a similar oil purchased in an art gallery in Bar Harbor
G WhiTman Oil PaintingMichaela
We have been researching a painting that we have by G WhiTman, it is 700 x 1300mm, oil on canvas signed in the bottom left had corner in blue.
The scene is looking up the length of a lake; definitely New Zealand bush along the banks, with the most intensely orange sunset, the light is amazing.
We live in New Zealand also, and the only information we have been able to obtain is on the discussion board.
I have also contacted the NZ Turnbull Library to see if they have any information about the artist, which I might be able to share with others.
The Shanty Town mentioned in (Jason Cross's entry of the 06/07/2007) may be of a Shanty Town that existed in New Zealand in the South Island in Arrowtown.

I have heard all the stories about Whitman as well and like the rest of you have found nothing definitve except the California listing. I have three Whitman paintings. All are beautiful (like Linda T's, one is done all in blue hues) and all were purchased for less than $75 each. Great art for a great price. Have noted that prices at auction have crept up a bit lately - $200 to $400 range for a large work.

Recently purchased a G. Whitman Oil painting at auction. Most of the discussions on scenes tell about mountains, lake and landscapes. This is building at dusk, with lights on and a lit oil lamp in front. Same artist?
On G. WhitmanLinda Talley
You know, as much as I have researched this fellow, I have found no real references, no confirmed facts about G. Whitman anywhere outside of Edan Hughes' listing of him in "Artists in California: 1786- 1940;" that he was listed as an active artist in the city of Carmel, in that city's directory of 1928. Like everyone else, I have read where people state that their painting has a card on its back that says his name is George, that he was born in Michigan, or that his name is Gordon and he was born in Italy... or in France... or in New Zealand... (which makes that painting mentioned by Mark N., the one signed as "Gordon," suddenly more interesting).
Alas, the only thing we know, for a fact, is that he was active in CA in 1928. We cannot really say where he was born, or that his first name was George or Gordon. Heck, truth is, we do not even know for certain that "he" might not just as well have been a "she." (If you have a painting by G. Whitman that has any information on its back that speaks of this artist and is printed, not handwritten, I would love for you to send me a copy!)
As to those who worry about so many paintings existing, all of the same, similar style, it is pretty common for a working artist to actively produce large numbers of a style if it has already proven to work for him. Heck, I've heard stories of Robert Wood painting the same scene, over and again, only moving his easel a few feet left or right, to grant small changes in perspective, then selling each canvas as the next buyer passed by. Or think of all the many French Impressionists who used to set up their easels along the streets of Paris, moving only a few feet each day (else get cuffed for wandering into another artist's staked out area), yet always managing to sell to that next new tourist who stopped to wonder at the beautiful new style. If something works, if people liked it and bought it when it was newly produced, then you can darn well bet they will like it a couple of generations later, as well, when it begins to get passed down through inheritance to following family members. This is the phenomena we are seeing with the Whitman paintings now.
As to value, the best thing you can do to raise auction prices is to simply hold out for higher ones when you are selling. Dumping your paintings on eBay at $15 a canvas doesn't help anyone, especially those who have truly been collecting his work. It is true, though, today, a standard 8" x 10" can still be found for between $15- $50, although there are those who are trying to get that value higher. It is mind-boggling, if not laughable, that there is one fellow out there who, when you google Whitman's name, you'll find has his large G. Whitman painting publicly listed for sale at $12,000. The only thing doing something like that does is to delude other owners into thinking they've struck real gold on that $10 Goodwill find. (I just bought one from them for $12, so they are still out there to be had.) Holding out for higher prices is one thing, but it also has to be within reason. A large Whitman ought, at the time of this writing, sell at auction for between $175- $350, depending on its uniqueness, quality, and framing. (I would have passed altogether on the $12 Whitman, and simply left it as a fun find for another collector to discover, except that it was painted fully in hues of blue, something a bit unusual for this artist.)
Also, on those values, pay close attention to the dates of the people in these forums and boards who are talking about the artist. If the dates are new, then you've gotten in on collecting someone pretty knew to the whole buying/selling scene, as well. In such cases, you have to expect growing pains in the prices you can get for your painting. If the dates are older, then you'll know you have someone who has likely already gone through such pains, and can expect to gain higher values.
Take good care,

I ALSO HAVE A PAINTING BY G.WHITMAN.IT IS SIMULAR AS MOST OTHERS EXCEPT IT IS IN SUNSHINE WITH BEAUTIFUL TEXTURE.THE SUNLIGHT PAINTED IN IT LOOKS MOST REAL AND IT IS SIGNED IN THE BOTTOM LEFT CORNER.ANY INFO WELCOME.
I believe a G Whitman travelled to New Zealand in the late 60's, taking slides of South Island scenes, then going back to America and painting the scenes from the slides. It would appear that some of the paintings he has painted, and desribed are from the South Island of New Zealand. I also own a large oil painting that he has painted, a scene from the Haast in the South Island. Hope this little information may be of help
question about signatureBetty
I am not familiar with Art at all but I purchased a beautiful painting, snow scene features mountains and water at a flea market for an extremely reasonable price. It is signed WHITMAN. I do not see a G or any other initials. Does anyone know if G. Whitman ever signed paitnings-WHITMAN? Thank you!
my signature is on the lower right and the T goes from the top of the last line of the H to the last line of the M
my father has a G Whitman painting of snow capped mountain with silver berch trees in golden brown colours but no stream or hut it is of a field area in front of the mountain during springtime. I too am interested in this artist. I have had my painting looked at by an art dealer who says it is only worth approx $100 - $150nz. This to me does not seem right as it was purchased in a camera shop in the late 1960's for more than this. hoping to be able to solve this mystery.

I too, are the caretaker of a G Whitman painting, which my mother bought for her mother and father as a gift in Nelson,New Zealand, many years ago,and when my grandmother died it was left to me in the will.It is of a central stream, single snow covered mountain, with silver berch trees starting to change colour, as the season begins to change.840X460 in size, signed bottom left corner, oil on canvas, looking like a pallet knife was used.
An addition to my last comment, I paid $35.00 at a used furniture/antique
I have just purchased an oil by G. Whitman simply because I liked the landscape.Out of curiousity did some looking on line to maybe get some info on the artist. Not much on bio, but did get some idea on what some of his work is going for, or what owners are asking. Anywhere from
$65.00 to $12,000 depending on size.Apparently some of his paintings are pretty large.Mine is about 36"x28". I love it.

I am glad there are others who have found a G whiTman painting too. 48 x 36. I stay in the NY area and anybody can get in touch with me for more info. I echo sandee's suggestion of Antiques Road show. May be I will and let you know what happens
I got given a G Whitman painting some time ago and now have shifted with no-where to put it. I came onto this site out of curiosity as to whether to put it into our garage sale. I now realise this would be an insult to the painting so thank you for this site, I may rethink my plans.

I too have a painting. It's a winter scene with trees, creek(river) and the sun setting. Here's soemthing for your thoughts.. I have an envelope attached to the back of the frame and inside it says... Mr. Whitman was: 1st place 1969 National Oil Comp., 2nd place 1970 International Oil Comp.
Exhibits:White House, Private Collection; Giacometti Gallery, Spain; Amsterdam Galleries; New York City Galleries, and lives off the Island Isbera, Spain. PLease if this isn't right I do not need hate mail. I'm just copying what was attached to the frame of my painting. Also, If anyone wants an emailed photo of my painting... I would love to trade and see his other works. Feel free to contact me. Good Luck!

Wow! I'm yet another G Whitman holder/ seeker of the truth. Mine is 31 X 55- large winter scene with a trail going up along a wire fence into the snowy woods. Lots of rich texture and winter colors (no mountains) G WhiTman signed on the lower LEFT. Nice heavy old gilt Mexican looking frame. I purchsed it at a small town estate auction in NE Wisconsin about 10 years ago; had no idea there was intrigue and mystery about this artist until I put his name into a search engine and followed the trail up into a number of conflicting places. Not only that- he's got landscapes spread all over the World! Prolific? If we all got together and displayed his work from JUST THIS website, we could apparently rent the entire Louvre! Somebody call Antiques Roadshow!
As with so many of the comments on here I thought I`d put in my two pennith worth. My painting is consistant with most on here, it is a snow scene of a mountain with a stream in the foreground with plenty of trees pine and birch all dusted with a covering of snow and signed in the bottom right hand corner, not left as others have stated.Does anyone know of a site where our paintings can be viewed. Thanking you all in anticipation and good luck with your own hunting.

I have a G Whitman painting. I don't know how much it is worth but I would never sell it because it is my favorite painting. I like the way the artist uses tecture to match what is being painted, whether it is water, tree bark, sky, or mountains. Kinkade may be the master of light but this artist is definitely the master of texture and light combined.

I recieved a painting today by G. Whitman. The frame says "Frames Del Norte" on the frame. It seems to be the common snow capped mountains with the stream and cabin. has anyone found out anything on the value of his works? please email me
I just bought a G WhiTman today at a second hand shop. 2X4, three mountain peaks, snow, stream down the center, cabin on the left.
I really doubt these are worth much money, I paid only $10.00 for mine. It is however, a nice pleasant painting to look at.
G.Whitman Mystery ContinuesGregory Lorenzo
I have purchased 4 G.Whitman Paintings of Various Sizes. To me they are all extremely detailed and well painted. A very under-rated artist. A definite sleeping giant.
G. Whitman is listed in the 'Artists in California 1780-Current', was born 1860 and died 1939. Almost all his paintings are views of Mt. Carmel.
G. Whitman was a prolific painter in the 1920’s – 1939 and he most often depicted the Mt. Carmel region of California in his paintings. I have seen his works selling for thousands and others for a few hundred dollars depending on size.
I hope this helps anyone.

I've just read the comments on this man and he obviously worked producing 'art by the yard', so to speak. I believe the value will be up to the one interested in it.
The piece I acquired is very much the same as so many others. Two snow capped mountain peaks in the middle left backgroung, trees in greens, browns and yellows on each side of two lakes with one in the foreground running off to the bottom left.
Looks like he used a pallet knife in many areas for speed and texture. This one does not have a cabin or any other forms of life. Also it is not as large, only 16x20 unframed. Painted very fast for quick return, I'm sure. He seems to have been very prolific, just not very creative, unless, of course, his employer required just this subject.
Nancy from Van Buren, Arkansas.
G Whitman InfoKeith
I found some more info on George Whitman. From an online gallery,This is the most ive gotten to date:
"Born in 1932, Ann Arbor, Michigan, He attended the University of Michigan, where he was an Art major. His wistful and mysterious landscapes create a feeling of fantasy, as well as realism. He frequently travels to Port Austin, Michigan as the scenery there is inspirational."
Since im from Michigan and have family in the "thumb", ive been to Port Austin several times and it is possible the common landscape he paints is there. He could have been a friend of the family I didnt know about.
He would now be 75 years old if still living. Hope this helps everyone.
I just found an G. WhiTman ebay listing with the following information. The listing claims: "I have found that he is a listed artist that was most prolific in the 1920's. Most of his work depicts the Mt. Carmel region of Tennessee."
I own a G. WhiTman oil 16 x 20. The scene is a decidedly Winter landscape - two mountain peaks in the background, the stream/river running to the left lower. Bare trees, some shrubs and evergreens fill in the landscape. It was in a condo I purchased in 1985. On the back are pencil written "Unframed $85" and another "$55.00". I believe that the prior owner obtained them at a bankruptcy auction.
i recently talked to someone about G.Whitman. He was an artist, but seems to be very little on him as for a biography. He did quite a few of the same painting but the value of the painting is within the eye of the beholder. It may not have $$$ value but is a beautiful work of art and i get many compliments on the one i have which is like so many who have typed comments. Mine is the snow capped mountains streams cabin and lots trees and greenery. Many have searched for info on him but none seems to be available. Good Luck on finding info but enjoy your paintings i feel he put alot of pride nd heart into his work. Constance
WOW G Whitman was a busy man an artist who painted the same scene so many times in fact he has the same scene where cabin is on right cabin is on left i have seen both oils. I have the one with the cabin on the left. its the snow capped mountains and stream and trees. It is a beautiful painting mine is an oil-gorgeous frame and is done in greens of different shades on trees and landscaping. The 2 lakes are gorgeous. Seems we who are many have this oil.My opinion is that he waorked for a private company who produced the same paintings by different artists who knows? I dont. but glad I found this sight. EBAY had 2 of these paintings-house on left side on 1 -right side on the other. enjoyed reading all your comments on this artist Thank You All for commenting. Ill keep checking comments.

I too seek info. Whitman is in book "Artists in California 1740-1940" by Edan Hughes. Pricy. Found my oil behind cheesy decoupage from retail store, original frame caught my eye. The price ranges (asking) are incomprehensible. One seller on ebay stated he lived 1865-1938. Mine has all the salient characteristics established and is 8"x10" and absolutely gorgeous. Any info would be greatly appreciated, thanx!

We just purchased a home with a G. Whitman oil painting on canvas that was purchased in the 1940's by the previous homeowner. We cannot find out any information on the artist. The painting is quite large with the signature in the lower right hand corner. The T is larger than the rest of the name. Please help. It is of a stream, mountain and fall foliage in brilliant colors. Any information would be appreciated.
Check websites for "Artistic Interiors", our G Whitman may have been employed by them some years ago as an "unknown artisrt", any info found please post here, thx

A friend of mine gave me a painting that was left in the house he just bought. It's 4'X 2'. Autumn birch trees with a small stream and 2 snow capped mountains. The colors are quite vibrant. It has the signature with the large T in the left corner.Does anyone know what the G stands for, or any other info?
It's amazing that so many of us have his paitings and from all corners of the globe! I am in England and i see that people have them from Wales, New Zealand and the USA... we bought an oil painting by G Whitman ..signed lower left in capitals, with a larger T from a second hand shop in New Zealand about 4 years ago. We believe it is of Mt Egmont ( Taranaki), NZ, due to the mountains appearance and the vegetation shown beside the road climbing towards it.

We just acquired a G. Whitman Painting. The signature is in the lower right hand corner and is in all capital letters except the T is bigger. Has anyone had any luck in geteting information on this artist? I would be very interested in anything that has been discovered Thanks!
We have an original G. WhitmanRonni Barbula
We love our painting, and are looking for information about it.
I recently purchased a beautiful 3 foot by 4 foot G Whitman landscape of a winter sunset in the woods which reflects in a stream. Deep orange colors with white snow and beige. I'm very fond of the painting but haven't been able to find much about the artist.
My painting is 16" x 20" with two snow capped mountains in the background depicted on a spring/summer day in a wooded area with a lake. It reminds me of a hike I took in Colorado's Estes Park.
This Artist G.Whitman must have painted the same scenery in all his Paintings. My Father purchased an Oil Painting in a NZ Auction by G.Whitman over 15 years ago which is 44" in Length and 25" in Height not including the Frame. Amazingly it has 3 Snow Capped Mountain Peaks, River and Wooded Area. I don't have a Picture of it as I live in Australia, however I would like to see if these pictures are all the same. Thanx
I purchased my landscape oil more than 25 years ago in Baltimore Maryland at an auction by Park West Gallery. I did not see Whitman listed among their current artist but they may have information available about the artist.

Elusive G. WhitmanGerald
I have been buying G. Whitman paintings on the internet for several months now. (Just because I like them) He is one of the more elusive artists to get any info on, but I have 2 different stories about who he is or was. You will often see him referred to as "a listed artist from Carmel, CA", but this may not be true! No one seems to know what "list" this is.
I Just Purchased one too.Robbie Thompson
