Glenna Goodacre designed the Indian woman Sacagawea which
appears on the front of the golden-colored dollar coins. The U.S. Mint gave
the artist 5,000 coins as payment for her work. Some collectors believe
Goodacre was given different coins that those sold by the U.S. Mint. They argue the Goodacre coins were specially burnished or polished. The Mint has
denied this, but collectors. Michael White, a spokesman for the Mint said,
"Nothing special was done. If you bought the standard uncirculated set, they are the same coins produced the same way." The Mint sells an uncirculated
coin set, which includes a golden dollar, for $14.95. Goodacre stated, "They
were not run of the mill coins. They were special. I did not request it and
it wasn't until later I found out they were specially treated." Goodacre sold
half of her coins for $200 dollars each.
