Gordon Stevenson
Wayne Stewart (12/02/2013)
In the early 1970's I and my young wife and young son were hired as caretakers for Mr. & Mrs. Gordon Stevenson at their Garrison NY farm affectionately known as the Upper and Lower Hayfields. We lived apart from the main house in a caretakers residence. My wife cooked and did general cleaning of the house while I was a maintenance man and managed a large organic garden the Stevenson's preferred to augment their meals from. Mr. Stevenson's studio consisted of a large barn with massive doors which could be opened on both sides and was constructed at the edge of a breathtaking rocky, tree lined gorge overlooking a bubbling trout stream below. During that time his hands were weak and he required a rubber-band to hold his brush in his hand. Nonetheless he made no mistakes in his execution. He once had me drive him to NYC to the Players Club where he introduced me as his acquaintance and we had lunch with celebrities who held him in high regard. While my employment was brief, I have fond memories of the Stevenson's and the "Hayfields" of Garrison New York.

Sylvia Stevenson Adelman (01/05/2010)
Graduate of Chicago Art Institute, co-painter of CAI mural. Apprentice to Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida, final year of apprenticeship probably 1917 since that is the date on Sorolla's portrait of Stevenson. Born in Scotland, immigrated to USA at age of 3. Married Candace Hewitt, direct descendent of Peter Cooper and Abram Hewitt, who died in the early 1960s. Second wife was Jane Bigelow Benjamin. Gordon Stevenson was my grandfather. (Not the same as F.G. Stevenson.) He died in 1982. He was claiming to be 92 at the time of his death; maybe the 1892 date is incorrect-- or possibly his claim stemmed from rivalry with his father-in-law, Edward Hewitt, who died at age 92 and told Gordon he would never make it to that age.

I am involved in a research project on the American sculptor Nancy Cox-McCormack. According to her memoirs,in 1917 she modeled a portrait bust of Gordon Stevenson. The current location of this work is unknown. I am attempting to account for all of her works. Any assistance on locating this work would be appreciated.

We have an original, beautiful oil painting on a 12 X 16 stretch frame, ( 17 1/2 X 13 1/4 mat in a gold gilded , ornate frame ) by G. Stevensen (signature writtwen in gold ) of two windmills and houses on a hill with a meadow - and a tree in right foreground. The sky has ominous dark clouds . The hill area has early morning? sunlight on it.It is a very romantic image. Does anyone know what year this was painted by Gordon, or any info on it being reproduced? Thanks!

It may be that your angler etching is of Edward R.Hewitt or possibly George M. L. LaBranch, both members of the Anglers' Club of New York. In each image, the angler is pictured standing in the stream,Hewitt with his rod under his arm and LaBranch casting as he moves through the flow. The images were reproduced in Catskill Rivers by Austin M. Francis and are also in the possession of the Anglers' Club of New York. They are of a series of 75. If yours is one of these, I'd be interested in knowing how you came upon them, as well as who, if anyone, commissioned them. Hewitt and LaBRanch were friendly antagonists over trout and salmon tatics, so it could be that he hewitt was the one who got GS to do the etchings. Please respond to my address above. Thanks

Gordon Stevenson painted an oil of my wife when she was one year old. I am always interested to hear stories about him, as he lived for a time near our home in the Catskills. He married into the family of a famous fisherman, Edward R. Hewitt, and has etchings in Hewitt's book,A Trout and Salmon Fisherman, Scribners. We also have an etching of a trout fisherman in the family. I need to see more of his work and would love any leads that you might have. Thanks.
