Iris Brody life and work
marlie graves (09/07/2014)
I'm working on a book about Robert Boardman Vaughn, who was married to Iris for a short time. Any information, or pictures of her work, which you would share, would be most appreciated.

I own one of her art works....she was a very talented artist that died of a drug overdose...she was called one of the three graces one of a trio that set a fashion trend of straight hair thin brows and granny dresses. She was the inspiration for the character Roxanne in the book the "subterranean s" by Jack Kerouac. she drew portraits of some of the most important writers of the 20 century. i feel because of her choice of materials used for her work has limited the recognition of her importance as part of the counter culture that influenced a nation and the world.

I am not a dealer or museum worker. My father purchased an Iris Brody painting for my bedroom in the the 1950's, which I have now inherited. (It hangs on my daughter's bedroom wall, now.) What I know about Iris Brody is mostly from my father's information and very minimal info on the web. Brody was a 20th century artist who lived in the lower East Side of New York City and hung with/lived during the era of the "beatniks". Date of death circa 1961(?) . Apparently my father purchased her work at a gallery showing in NYC. Most of her paintings were on special paper over masonite board. In addition, Brody used ink and oil wash which gave her pictures a kind of luminescent shimmer. Unfortunately, the artist materials were "unstable" and as a result, Brody's artworks seldom lasted for more than a decade or two, if any still can be found.(Rarely have I seen any of Brody's paintings for sale. However, via the internet, I've seen one or two up for auction recently which were not as sweet as my painting.)The reason my picture has lasted is due to the fact that my father took special precautions 60 years ago(!)to preserve all his artwork and it has paid off. I hope this helps you. i
