James Everett Stuartrobert donaldson
Are these all common stuart works. Stuart is an old relative. As I understand a very prolific painter-jk. When $ was needed some pieces were thrown together quickly and haphazardly...Before he earned a reputation that is.

I obtained a painting by JE Stuart of San francisco Bay from my Grandmother. I suspect she purchased it in approximately 1930-1940. She advised me that JE Stuart was from Maine and moved to California to paint. The painting has San Francisco Bay prior to the building of the Golden Gate Bridge. It depicts the mountains on each side of the bay and the sun set over the bay. In the painting is a ship which is both dail powered and steam powered, which to me would indicate late 1800 to early 1900 time frame. The painting has some smoke damage from hanging over a fireplace, but I plan to have it cleaned ASAP. Beautiful colors and scene.

I have an oil painting dated 1888, titled Loch Ness on Inverness, with artist name J.E. Stuart - does anyone know if this is James Everett Stuart? Is it possible he travelled to Scotland around this time? The painting is a beautiful landscape with interesting detail, plus an amazing frame. Thanks!

I have 3 paintings of James Everett Stuart. They have been handed down through the family as he is a distant relative. I have a painting that is numbered, 819 and is written on the back " Original Sketch -No 819 - 18x30 - $600. A dry hillside near Mammoth Hot Springs. Yellowstone National Park. Oct 3, 1885." And his signature. The painting has three small holes in the canvas. Any suggestions on how I go about finding someone to repair this?
Painting on WoodDennis Fleming
I have a J.E. Stuart painting dated 1932 of the Sacramento River. It's signed with an original $500 price on it. It actually appears to be painted directly on wood. I inherited it from my mother 25 years ago. Any ideas what to do with it?

I own a painting signed by J.E. Stuart dated June 8, 1903 with a number 937 above the signature on the left hand corner. The painting is pears, grapes, and peaches. On the back of the art is a handwritten message: J. H. Simmons call 50c (it looks like a cent sign). Would anyone know what this could mean? I think of a poker game.

Regarding Rudy Strasser's query of 2/7/06, anyone interested in james E. Stuarts western subjects artworks should consult the Stuart manuscript material within the California section of the California State Library in Sacramento. Stuart's papers offer some valuable insifghts into his personal history, methods of work as an artist and so on.
I own a Stuart painting of yellowstone park, signed and dated jJuly 17, 1914. On the back, Stuart has written "To my good friend Edward J. Clinton may 21, 1921". Would anyone out there have any information on who Edward J. Clinton could be? I would like to know more about the history of this painting.

In regards to Fran Stuart Anderson's comments, I felt I should give what information I have. My neighbor is Joey Stuart Carpenter. She has some paintings of her father's great-uncle, J.E. Stuart. She told me that Gilbert Stuart was also a relative of her father. Her father, Joe Stuart, passed away a few years ago, but was a respected member of our community and one of the old-timers here. Many of his (J.E. Stuart's) paintings were ruined from a flood in Stockton, Ca. when the house they were in sustained water damage. He was such a prolific painter that all his relatives got tired of being inundated with his paintings. At the time, he wasn't a recognized artist yet, or they wouldn't have felt that way. Joey told this story to me a long time ago. She lives in Salyer, California, 5 hours from San Francisco.
