I see John Otis Adams lived from 1851-1927. Were there some of his copies of scrimshaw that were made on actual bone, tooth, or ivory? The reason I ask is because one source I have accessed said that his pieces were made out of environmentally friendly man-made material, and I cant believe that during his lifetime 'environmentally friendly man-made material' was an issue, or possible because of the lack of testing equipment to verify it was safe. One specific piece in question is the 'Napoleon scrimshaw man-made material tooth' dated 1815, and signed J.A.

Scrimshaw marble game board
Kathleen Sommer (05/12/2008)
Bought an ivory marble solitaire game board with black marbles at a flea market. Have done the hot needle test and it passed. There are 4 etchings, a serpent, a globe with e pluribus unum, etc. The base is covered with felt. There is no name on this. Any ideas??

Faux Scrimshaw
Don Lenker (03/05/2008)
Ebay recently had a posting from England for the very same games board and listed it as "faux". Attached photos, indeed, showed the same item I have. It included the same cracks, etchings, etc., as the item discussed in this web-site.

I have a beautiful ivory or bone carving of an African bush scene depicting many different creatures. Some are obvious but many, such as the spiders, snails & snake are hidden and hard to find. Just as they would be in the real bush! Doe's anyone have any info on the carver John Adams who's name is carved into the bottom right hand corner of this piece?
