Two Paintings of Ohio town scenes
John gibson (05/15/2010)
I have a 24" X 20" watercolor called "A Wet Day on Water Street," and a 14" X 18" watercolor (unknown title) which depicts downtown Hudson, OH on a wintry morning, with a foot of snow on the streets, several pedestrians, and what looks like a 1962 automobile. "A Wet Day..." features several wet pedestrians on a very rainy street in what looks like Akron. All of the other Lowell Ellsworth Smith paintings I have seen seem to be either western landscapes or Mexican buildings. I would like to find out more about these and other paintings by him which feature Ohio town scenes. My father, who worked at Goodyear for over 35 years says that the Hudson winter street scene with the car (and prominent tires) was originally done as a proposal for a Goodyear advertisement. FYI, the central building in the foreground is the old Hudson public library, and the building just behind it is the house where our family lived when I was born in 1950. I hope to have sendable images of the two paintings before two long. I would love to hear from anyone who has similar Smith paitings, or who knows more about mine. Thank you, John Gibson
