Nelson Shanks
Mary Faye Dudley (09/05/2005)
I was quite fortunate to have Nelson Shanks paint a portrait of me in 1978-79, He and his wife were living at the time in Pennsylvania in a stone cottage on the Delaware River, a property which was part of the Estate of Andalusia. Mr. Shanks was in residence there while restoring antique furniture at Andalusia for the Biddle-Duke Family. In addition to decades of appreciation for the quality of this portrait and the subsequent global recognition he has received for his magnificent talent, I am extremely grateful to Mr. Shanks for his personal rapport throughout the process. For me, this was a time of deep personal conflict, reassessment of what is a genuine sense of values, constant travel and an extraordinary longing to be spiritually and physically anchored. A professional need to travel frequently to Philadelphia and a series of mutual contacts and accidental occurances there led to my opportunity to pose from time to time over a period of months, while Mr. Shanks completed the portrait and then selected a beautiful 18th Century frame for it. Those many hours of occasional conversation, comfortable silence and the fabulous aroma of spices and gourmet soups and stews floating up the stairwell from his wife's artistic creations in the kitchen below were indeed a sustaining and healing process for me. Seated so comfortably and quietly for so many hours in the Italian Renaissance chair that Mr. Shanks was in the process of restoring offerred me the rare opportunity for solitude, internal reflection and seeking ways of resolution of the problems I was dealing with. When I heard quite recently that Mr. Shanks had painted the last living portrait of Princess Diana, my immediate thought was how fortunate she was to have had the opportunity to spend time in an atmosphere of comfort, respectful silence and always gentle, appropriate response. During a time of extreme conflict, she must have truly valued the time with Mr. Shanks. I would like to forward my very special thanks to him through you, if possible, for allowing me to become one of his incredible canvases and for being an extemely kind and perceptive human being. Thanks. Mary Faye Dudley
