touch of gold paintingbill smith
i was curious about the name robert wood and had gone on another site.i saw the painting path of gold. it is a landscape with a treeline on either side and a road running between. i bought a painting which i liked cheap. on seeing the name robert wood i started to dig. the signature is representative of the original signature with some differances.now noone always signs their name always the same but useally close. the painting i have is a scene of trees on each side of a river with clouds reflecting in the water and the sun is coming in at the right side. there are also mountians in the back ground. i'm sure if it was a forgory the artist would not use this name and plate it as this artist's work. if it were an artist with the same name they would not stroke out the letters the same. so did robert survive out a son maybe who carried on his work. the painting is 24"x60". i know it is real enough to be in my living room but is it anything else beyond that?

The colors are very Autum, it seems so real that when I look at it seems to be real water in the creck. Robert Wood QuestionsJeffrey Morseburg
Most of the inquiries we receive are questions about prints, not paintings. Those who find Wood items often confuse the two. Wood was a prolific painter and more than one hundred of his paintings were reproduced as color reproductions. The reproductions date as far back as the 1920's, so they appear to be antiques to those less familiar with art. Because these were just inexpensive prints they have no collector value, but serve decorative purposes when they are in good condition. The most popular print was "October Morn" and more than a million copies of it were sold in less than two years. "Autumn Bronze", "Spring in the Smokies", "Early Spring", "Mystic Pond", "Grand Tetons", "Autumn Leaves", "October Gold" and "White Mountains and Aspens" are all titles of popular prints. On the Robert Wood web site we name many of the popular print titles to help people identify that what they have is a reproduction. The prints were usually mounted on cardboard, sometimes on a textured surface and often packaged with a nice frame and a gold title plate. The backs of the prints, but not the originals were usually sealed with paper, a dust wrapping. If you have an original, it will usually be hand-titled on the back and have Wood's reproduction rights rubber stamp on the back.
web site. Wood's early work was not always stamped or titled, so we try to look at images to help people sort out what they have. Jeffrey Morseburg, Morseburg Galleries

3 MINT RARE 1967 PRINTS (1 of 1000) D.A.C.,NY. from Post Cereal-HELPBOSS
Hi, I found 4 old POST CEREAL PROMO Lithographs still in the
original pkg. and tubes.
Can you shed any light on this prom from the early 60's?
The were a promo in 1967
My dad sent in so many box tops and money and they sent him 3
nice lithographs on canvas.
they are copies of famous paintings and are still in the
original tubes with the post label and postage paid etc.
all I did is take them out once to look at them so I opened
one end carefully.
they are about 24 x 16 inches I guess and on canvas.
Van Gogh and Augusta Albo the other I can't remember I don't
wanna open the tube at this time to see.
Each Litho is 1 of 1000 only made.
D.A.C. NY. , Donald Art Company, Inc. of N.Y.
Post changed owners and Kraft owns them now, so I cannot get
anywhere that way.

"Mystic Pond" and other Robert Wood PrintsJeffrey Morseburg
"Mystic Pond", "Autumn Leaves", "Breakers at Twilight", "Autumn Sunset", "October Morn", "Approach of Winter", "Early Spring" and "Autumn Sunset" are just a few titles of the more than one-hundred Robert Wood prints. These were all mass produced prints and so they are just worth a few dollars. Most have "D.N.C.N.Y." on them which is "Donald Art Company, New York", the publisher. The prints were published in different sizes. Many were packaged by Illinois Molding with frames and gold title plates to dress them up, but they were all inexpensive prints.
Robert Wood / Mystic PondDwight
I have a framed Robert Wood "Mystic Pond" measuring 20" x 48" with the brass name plate on the frame. The signature appears on the lower right with no other information that I can find anywhere. It is on a thick textured paper(simulated brush strokes?) that appears to have been adhered to a heavy cardboard backing, so I imagine it is a repro but It does have some age to it and the previous owner had it for 30 years. Does anyone have any information as to how long these have been made and is there any value to them?
The picture is in perfect condition but the frame is showing it's age. If there is any value, would any be lost through refinishing of the frame?
I have a large painting by Robert Wood. Called With a gold plate that have "Autumn Leaves"

Robert William WoodDebra
I have a small 8x10 of October morn. Old frame and looking from the back it is canvas. Does anyone know anything of such a size and if on canvas is a reproduction?
We have what appears to be a painting by Robert Wood. however it also looks as if it is stamped at the bottom of the picture. it says "Mystic Pond by Robert Wood" and of course on the lower left corner it says 1967 Donald Art Co. Inc NY No 5265 and on the lower right hand in fine print it says litho USA.
Is this worth anything besides its beauty?
"October Gold", "Autumn Sunset", "Approach of Winter"Jeffrey Morseburg
The three titled mentioned in the inquiries below are all common, mass-produced reproductions. Many of the prints were packaged in frames that were nice for the day with little gold title plates. These framed prints were often sold by Illinois Molding Company, Winde Fine Prints or other companies. "October Morn" was the most common of the reproductions and more than one-million were printed. People often confuse the prints for paintings, as some of them were printed on textured surfaces. None of the prints are worth more than a few dollars. The paintings were usually done on canvas, the prints on paper or cardboard, usually with paper backing, but with the paintings you should see the canvas from the back, usually with a hand printed title in the artist's hand. Jeffrey Morseburg
Autumn SunsetMarianne Centric
I have an "Autumn Sunset" painting signed by Robert Wood on the bottom right hand corner. Gold frame-not dated & measures 24" x 36". How can I tell if its real? Robert W. Wood Texas WorksJeffrey Morseburg
"Texas Spring" was a title that Robert Wood used more than once. Most of his texas Bluebonnet works have simple titles like "Texas Bluebonnets", "Springtime in Texas" or "Texas Spring". There are a number of examples of Bluebonnet paintings on the web site.
Does Anyone know where an original paining by Robert Wood titles 'Texas Spring' is??

English CountrysideJeffrey Morseburg
Unfortunately, your "English Countryside" is a popular print by Robert W. Wood, not a painting. These were mass-produced and inexpensive color reproductions, so while they are great for decorating, they have no collector value. Jeffrey Morseburg
Robert W. Wood AuthenticationsJeffrery Morseburg
Robert W. Wood paintings can range in value from $500 for small Northwestern paintings that he did in Portland and Seattle - before he reached artistic maturity - to thousands of dollars for later and more dynamic works. Each subject has its own price range and for example, the early Texas paintings are generally worth more than the marine paintings or Eastern works. Like all paintings, the question of quality is paramount, but size, condition and provenance are other important factors. The first thing to do is to make sure you have an original painting and not one of Wood's popular reproductions, which are found across the country and around the world. In order to establish a value, you need to make sure you have an original and authentic painting and then have it looked at by someone with extensive knowledge of the artist's work. Jeffrey Morseburg, Morseburg Galleries
English CountrysideJeffrery Morseburg
"English Countryside" was the title of a mass produced and well known reproduction by Robert W. Wood, so I would suspect that what you have is a print rather than an original. Jeffrey Morseburg
Robert W. Wood AuthenticationsJeffrey Morseburg
In order to make the public more aware of Robert W. Wood's life and career, a few years ago we created a dedicated web site. It has a great deal of information on Wood's life and career and is illustrated with hundreds of images of the artist and the works we have owned and sold. Most of the "Robert Woods" that people call and write to us about turn out to be examples of one of the hundreds of his paintings that were published as inexpensive color reproductions. In the case of "October Morn" for example - published by the Donald Art Company of New York - more than a million prints were sold. On the site we list the titles of many of the popular reproductions. They were sold in department stores and even available in Blue Chip and S. & W. Green Stamp catalogs. An original painting is generally painted on canvas - though some smaller works were on board - hand titled and stamped on the back, though Wood did not use his rubber stamps as faithfully in the Texas years. Many of the prints were actually sold with nice frames and small gold title plates, making them look very much like a painting, but by matching the title to the list on th web site, you can tell if you have a reproduction. Paintings purchased for a few dollars at yard sales or flea markets tend to be prints. Most of the people who purchased original Robert Wood paintings in the 1930's, 1940's and 1950's were not collectors, so they valued the one or two original paintings in their homes and let their children know when and where they purchased them. I like to say that a story usually accompanies these early works. We are always willing to look at good quality images if you are unsure as to what you have or need an appraisal or evaluation. w. lee o'daniellee danielson
I have had for many years a wonderful painting given to my grandfather Pappy O'Daniel for his 50th birthday in 1940. it was painted by G. Day and I have just found out who he is. Very interesting painting of bluebonnets with an plaque enscribed to my grandfather from his "official" family. Given the age and history I tend to think it should be in a museum. What do you think?
Autumn Bronze paintingArlean
A friend of mine has a painting signed by Robert Woods with a black teardrop under his name and a date '65. On the back is a sticker stating the name of the painting as "Autumn Bronze" framed by Academy Arts, 1840 Clybourn Ave., Chicago, IL 60614. The painting is approximately 36inches by 60inches. The frame is also beautiful. Is there anyone that give me any information about this painting. Thank you.

I have a Oil painting signed Robert Wood '62. It is title "Breakers at Twilight" its a wonderful ocean veiw. I was wondering if there is any information on this seeing as its not on Elizabeth's list
Here is a website with information related to all of your questions.
As you can see, our prints have little or no value. There have been millions of Robert Wood Reproductions and I like the story about the African Chief who was found to have one in his hut! Our grandparents must have all bought these from the same catalogues -- they are nice though. Cheers!
Texas Hill Countryjlm
I adore paintings of the Texas Hill Country by either Robert Wood or Porfirio Salinas.I own a couple. Please let me know if anyone would like to exchange images.
G Dayjess forester
We own a G Day oil--a blubonnet scene purchased by my step father in San Antonio--story is that He painted in the store window at Joske's Dept store--was perhaps an alcoholic at the time and if he was pleased with a work, he would sign it G Day meaning that he had a good day that day.
We love it ---inherited it.
Robert Wood on LinenDonna Keller
I have a painting that appears to be an Autumn piece. The signature is Robert Wood and it seems to be on linen. I am interested to learn anything on this at all.
I have posted a piece on AskArt.com which is signed "T. Wood." Althought my research on Travers Wood initially led me to believe that my incredible piece was that of a relatively "unknown", I have since reviewed Robert Wood's work and now question the identity of my artist. Please check out the image under "Travers Wood" and ya'll let me know if you, too, see a great deal of similarity. I've no idea how to approach appraisal w/out confirmed identity. Tks, and enjoy my cowboys! Piper, The Smokies of E. Tennessee.
I was delighted to see that AskArt and the latest edition of Davenport are recognizing G.Day as one of Robert Wood's pseudonyms.Wood used G.Day exclusively while he lived and painted in Texas. There are many theories about this issue. The most prevelant seems to be that this allowed Wood to paint ouside his contractural relationships with dealers representing him at the time. Another theory is that if Wood was not pleased with a painting, he would sign it G.Day. Of the total number of G.Day paintings I have seen, in my humble opinion, they appear to be some of his very best work. A G.Day painting was auctioned on 9/16 by Matthews Gallery titled Autumn Road in Early Autumn. It can be viewed at AskArt under auction results. You bee the judge. I would like to hear from anyone that owns G.Day paintings so we can share provenance, genre, history etc. Thank you.
Robert Wood painted under several pseudonyms. The most famous was probably G.Day. He also painted under Terbor(Robert spelled backwards) though I have never seen a Terbor). I have seen several G. Day paintings. Does any one have any information that would continue to enhance and document this pseudonym including auction records, ownership, etc. Thank you
"When the Blue Bonnets Bloom"
Does anyone know where "When the Blue Bonnets Bloom" was painted? Is it a Texas scene? If so, does anyone know where in Texas it was painted? We have a copy of the painting and have often wondered if the spot in the painting still blooms with bluebonnets. If anyone knows they can email me at mom at clansullivan dot com. (I am trying to avoid the spammers.) Thank you!
"Path of Gold", 1946, Robert WoodD.D.Haverley
I have a 24" x 30" painting done on 1/4" hardboard of some kind, entitled on the paper backing of the old frame "PATH of GOLD" and signed "ROBERT WOOD '46" in the lower right corner. It is a beautiful autumn depiction, covered with some kind of clear shellac(that seeped over onto the back of the hardboard.) Would this be one of his original works? Your reply will be appreciated. Thank you.

I have a painting signed: Robert Wood 53 in the lower left hand corner. It is a fall colored landscape scene with a stream running between trees on both sides. It was professionally mounted by Aaron Bros. of Calif. Could this be Robert W. Wood? Did he ever sign his name without his middle initial and place it in the lower left hand corner?

We have a painting that my parents purchased around 1950. The gallery sticker on the back was in Chicago and it is stamped Autumn Sunset. The few pictures I've see of his work are all landscapes. This one has a building in it, which I think is rare. Anyone have any info?
Robert W. Wood LithosDeja
I have several lithos with "Litho USA" and "DAC:NY" on them. Also included on them are the catalog # from the Lithographer and the titles. He signed his name Robert Wood on all of them, without his middle initial. I have "Ocean Spray" (quite large), "Pacific Sunset", "Autumn Bronze", and "Mountain Campers". On the back of the last one is a stamp "Sheffield" with the same Catalog # from the front (105-M) 8 x 10 by Robert Wood.
Anyone knowing anything about the worth of these, could you please e-mail me?
If I remember right, my family bought one every year from him someplace by Astoria, Oregon. Just a little roadside stand he had I think, or a small shop. This was roughly 40 years ago. I remember shaking his hand when he told me to keep up with the painting.
I have a painting called "Early Spring"
I got it from a garage sale and I believe it is an original, signed at the bottom right corner.
Would like to find out the value of this painting. Thanks for your help.

Golden SurfAndy B.
I too have a Golden Surf . I am not sure if it is a reproduction it has a brass name plate on it as well with the painting name and Robert Wood on it. It is at least from the 1970s because of it being in the house since then. We know nothing of it.Or even if this is the right Robert Wood? I read that a repo up close has black dots. Mine does not. It looks like hard canvass under a magnifying glass and color. There are pencil markings and numbers on the back. Any help is appreciated and how do I find out if it is a reproduction or not?
I have a rather large painting called Golden Surf ...I fell in love with it because it reminded me of Laguna Beach(who knew he lived there) Just wanted to know if anyone knows anything about this painting . and how do I find out if it is a reproduction or not?
