Ruth Turner Wilcox and "The Mode in Costume"Jennifer Hawkins Hock
Ruth T. Wilcox's illustrations and research are equally impressive in "The Mode in Costume" - as well as her other fashion-related books. I am interested in learning more about her training and any other work she produced. Does anyone know whether she illustrated for sewing pattern companies such as Advance,Simplicity,McCall,or Vogue. It is very difficult to find any information about the illustrators of sewing pattern envelopes - which have at times exhibited truly beautiful artwork. I would appreciate any information regarding these unattributed illustrators. The artwork of Ruth Turner Wilcox resembles that appearing on vintage sewing patterns - so I wondered if she might be one of those forgotten artists.

I have a painting by Ray Wilcox titled "The Fair Wind" I can't find much info about him or his work, but more on his wife and daughter. Does anyone have additional info.

Ruth Wilcox was the only child of Ray Wilcox & Ruth Turner Wilcox. She was a student of her mother & father as well as Harvey Dunn. I met her personaly at the end of her life & bought a number of her works. That was about 20 years ago.She passed shortly after. For the logest time her paintings did not bring very much money. Recently her works have started to bring four figures particularly at Skinners Auction in Boston. She is often confused with her mother Ruth Turner Wilcox who was indeed an Artist & Illistrator & auther of many books on the subject of design & clothing. Her father was also a painter of marine sceans & an illustrator.

Born in New York City and lived in various cities on the East Coast. She studied with the illustrator Harvey Dunn and with Nebraska born artist Grant Reynard. She did portraits of both Dunn and Reynard. The portrait of Reynard is now at The Museum of Nebraska Art, Kearney, Nebraska. Wilcox's mother was R Turner Wilcox who wrote "The Mode in Costume" in 1942, an illustrated guide to clothing.
