painting of boy smokingBrenda
When my father was a small boy, his family (Herman Miller family) rented a house from Steve Alke and did farm work around there. Mr. Alke sat my father down one day, put a hat on his head, and had him hold either a pipe or a cigar in his mouth, and painted his picture. I would like to know if this painting still exists, and, if so, where I would be able to see it. My father has been deceased since 1999, but I can remember him talking about it when I was younger. I would appreciate any info that anyone is aware of. Thanks!

I am Stephen Alke's grandaughter. He was married to artist Elizabeth Heil Alke. He excelled at protrait work and landscapes. He was born in Augusta, Kentucky and spent the majority of his married life in New Richmond, Ohio. He and his wife owned a farm there and had one son Robert. The Cincinnati Art Museum has a number of their works but I do not know if they are ever displayed. He also did policitcal cartoons for the Cincinnati Enquirer. I hope that you will enjoy your painting and that it will be passed down to future generations.
