Help to identify if my Mother's painting is by Thomas Sully
M.Maxwell (11/13/2009)
My Mother purchased a painting around 1950 in a New York City Art gallery which was supposed to be a Thomas Sully. It is an unsigned full figure portrait of a young girl wearing a blue dress holding a hoop and stick toy. This painting is large at almost 5' tall. If you have information or futher questions regarding this painting please contact me.

Major John Biddle print
Jim Dickey (09/28/2009)
The original of the portrait of Maj. John Biddle hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It is by the famous 19th Century portraitist Thomas Sully. Biddle (1792-1859) served in the army in the War of 1812 when he was only 20 but left the army in 1821 to go into business. So he must have been between 20 and 29 when the portrait was painted. The artist Thomas Sully (1783-1872)painted some 2,000 portraits in his 89 years, mostly of prominent people. Sully studied in London under history painter Benjamin West. My print of the painting, also on board, is 21 by 28 inches. It was printed by the International Art Publishing Co., which was in business around the turn of the 19th-20th centuries. So the print is about 100 years old. Lots of info on Google, which is where I got this.

Miss Pearce
Jeff Hapke (04/26/2008)
I also have a Miss Pearce portrait. On the front, it has DAInc or DAIac in red on the bottom left hand corner where an artist's signature would normally be. Does yours have that marking too?

Sully Portrait of Thomas Biddle
elizabeth milroy (03/19/2008)
The original oil painting by Sully of Major Thomas Biddle is at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Color reproductions of the painting have been available for a long time -- an original oil would not have "air holes" in it -- tho it could be an oil copy. Biddle married Ann Mullanphy of St. Louis and was killed in a duel in 1831. He and his wife were buried at Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis. E. Milroy

Thomas Sully-Portrait of Major Thomas Biddle
Maureen (01/05/2008)
I have a framed portrait (on wood I believe) of Major Thomas Biddle. My reserach shows it was done in 1818. I cannot find a photo of the portrait just a reference ot it stating half body, facing left. If anyone has any more inforamtion I would appreciate it. The portrait measures 8" by 10". I don't know if it's a copy or what. I don't think it's a print because the paint seems real old and has little air holes in it. Please forgive my ignorance as I know nothing about art. Thanking you in advance for your help. Regards, Maureen Moran

Has anyone run across prints attributed to Thomas Sully of Maj. John Biddle and his wife?

Miss Pierce
Molly Parker (07/18/2005)
I have a framed oil painting I inherited from my mother in law last year when she died at age 87. I believe it belonged to her parents. It has a typed card on the back of the frame describing it as Thomas Sully, Miss Pierce 1783-1872. It is a beautiful oil portrait of a lady. Does anyone know anything about when or where Sully created this particular painting? My mother in laws' family is in Florida/Georgia. Her dad was a doctor and many people gave him things during the Great Depression when they could not pay their bill? Perhaps it came from one of his patients.

Portrait of "Miss Hayne"
Arthur H. Mitchell (06/17/2004)
My family owns a beautiful Sully portrait (face and shoulders) of my GG grandmother, Frances Duncan Hayne of Chalreston, S. C.(dau. of Col. Arthur Peronneau Hayne of Charleston S.C. (once, US Senator from SC) and Frances Gibson Duncan of Carlisle PA; wife of Col. Lloyd James Beall) dd. 1840 and signed TS on reverse canvas, and listed in Sully's register as portrait of "Miss Hayne". I do not believe this portrait has ever been photographed for inclusion to collected works of Sully. - A. Mitchell, Fairfax, Va.
