Family membersHayford Peirce
Waldo's two twins live in London and Brussels, and another daughter is somewhere in Maine.
I'm his nephew -- his older brother, Hayford, was my father. I live in Tucson, where Waldo's sister, Ada, lived for many years.
I was just back in Bangor after many years and took photos of Hayford's Field, where we played baseball as a kid, and of Hayford Park, which is the baseball stadium behind Stephen King's house.
I also have an old book called History of the Hayford Family....
All the best,
Ada and WaldoHayford Peirce
Ada was the younger sister of Waldo, by two or three years, not his daughter.
As for the nephew who lives in Tucson, that is me (I, to be persnickety). I'll send you an email with my phone number.
Alzira updateHayford Peirce
Just found out that she died in Boston in June, aged 102.
I'd never heard of him until a few months ago, but that doesn't mean much. But Dr. Bill Gallagher, a Waldo expert who lives in Bangor, had never heard of him either. I gather he's still alive in San Diego at a ripe old age. (I do remember seeing Waldo briefly in a 1947 "motor court" outside San Diego when I was 5 years old, so it's possible he could have been visiting Franco....
Waldo's wives, in order, were Dorothy, Ivy, Alzira, and Ellen. Alzira is, amazingly enough, still alive in Boston, at age 100-plus....
Waldo and his friend FrancoLM Barnes
Hello, does anyone have any information about Waldo's friendship with his friend Franco. They knew each other in Bangor, Maine, and kept in touch through Waldo's life.

I have a lovely oil painting by Waldo, but I am unable to find any history of it. It depicts a shepherd sleeping under a tree next to a brook holding a baby lamb. It is signed and titled, but not dated. The style is impressionistic. Did he paint this in the '20's while in Paris?
did he ever paint a picture of any of hemmingways childerns(female) I remember seeing a bio on hemmingway on tv and it stated that he had
life-size painting of his fatherHayford Peirce
I'm Waldo's nephew, living in Tucson. We used to have, for many years, an enormous painting of his mother -- it got destroyed at some point when the storage facility in Bangor it was being stored in collapsed after a snow storm. I would be curious to know if yours is the same as ours -- Waldo would paint the same picture over and over.
I have a [*]large[*] but not life-size painting of Waldo's father sitting at an ecritoire. Right now it's hanging right beside the ecritoire itself. I know that I've seen a 1980s newspaper article with a picture of Johnny Peirce, Waldo's son, standing beside an identical painting that he had in his art gallery in Bangor. So at least [*]two[*] of these paintings exist, maybe more....
I trying to find out if Waldo Pierce ever painted a life size painting of his father? I'M Quite sure I have one of his mother

I recently visited a home in Newburyport MA that I was told once belonged "to the Pierce that painted Hemingway." Also, that a painting of Hemingway was made in the garden of this home.
Do you have any information to confirm this?

Couldn't help noticing your line about the "trove" of Pierce paintings in your family. I am trying to track down images of any paintings done by Waldo in Castine, Maine. The ones I believe exist, but haven't located, are several of a family or individuals from that family (the Ordways, specifically Pat Ordway, who is featured in "Breakfast in the Barn" as well as in "The Ordway Barn") on the Castine seashore with a large rock in the scene. There are appear to be others out there featuring the barn itself. Any input or leads would be greatly appreciated.
The Bowmen of hatchet MountainJeff Lord
Hi Dan: I just saw this painting - or another astonishingly close to it - titled "The Bowmen of Hatchet Mountain" at the Liros Gallery in Blue Hill Maine, yesterday. Waldo was a great friend and crony of my aunt and uncle who ran a boys summer camp (Hatchet Mountain Camp) in Hope, Maine - where I now live. It is exactly as you described your painting, and I'm wondering if the painting in the gallery is yours? I believe the buildings in your painting may be the (former) old Hobbs family farm, on what is now Route 105 as it rises up over the easterly face of Hatchet Mountain in Hope.
We have a trove of Pierce paintings in my family, along with quite a few of his beautiful painted envelopes that he sent to people.
Re. John Marr's question about Peirce HouseDan Hall
I also have a painting by Waldo Peirce; it's of a cottage in Hope Maine. It's dated 1956. The house and part of a barn are obscured by trees. In the foreground are Waldo (back to) and his wife sitting on the ground in a field/lawn with two children wearing Indian headdresses shooting arrows at a target and a toddler trying to play with a dog.
I believe this is a place that he occasionally went to for short stays.
When in Maine during the summer months he stayed in his house in Searsport, Maine, which is a large house, three stories, one of the old sea captain (or other persons of wealth) houses of which there are several in town. Perhaps the painting you have is his “summer house”.
QuestionJohn S Marr, MD
I have a Peirce oil painting given to my late father by Waldo Peirce sometime in the early 1940's -- in lieu of payment for delivering his wife's baby in NYC. It is a painting of a large house with massive trees in the forground, presumably somewhere in Maine. I would be interested if anyone may be able to help me in finding out what house it may have been. I can provide an image to anyone who might respond. Thanks.

Hemingway by PeirceAnthony Calicchio
I have in my posession an original Waldo Peirce portrait of Ernest Hemingway. It is signed by both men on reverse .It is inscribed with a Hemingway quote that is also signed. This portrait was indeed executed over an existing Peirce work. The shadow of "WP58" can be seen upon examination in the lower right hand corner of this most classic of Hemingway portraits. If there is anyone who would like to know more and see photos ,please correspond. It is a documented fact that both these men had a reunion in Tuscon,Az in 1959,and that is where and when I believe it was done.

Waldo Peirce painted a series of paintings of the Ordway family in Castine, Maine. I am a close part of this family and am looking to acquire any prints or originals containing subject matter pertaining to the Ordways.

I have a portrait called "Girl in Pink Hat" painted by Waldo Peirce at Cannes about 1924. It was one of six unsigned paintings identified by Waldo's wife, Ivy T. Peirce, February 9, 1950. It measures 21" by 25". I purchased it about 1973 from Ann Braswell Weir.

A large oil by Peirce of a slaughtered steer hangs in the stairwell leading to the second floor of Ernest Hemingway's house in Ketchum, Idaho. It is inscribed to Hemingway from Peirce as a birthday present.
Peirce's papers are at Colby College in Maine.
Waldo PeirceBurt Schneider
Peirce spent winters in Tucson where his children attended a boarding school run by my parents. He did a number of oils and watercolors set at the school, Treehaven. Most of these are part of the permanent collection at the Schneider Museum of Art at Southern Oregon University, Ashland. In 1984, the museum published a monograph by my parents, Bill and Florence Schneider, detailing their friendship with Peirce.

He's also mentioned on page 252, Volume 3, of Samuel Eliot Morrison's Oxford History of the American People, 1965.

Waldo Peirce ,a life long friend of Hemingway ,painted a number of portraits of Hemingway ,the most famous being "Kid Balsac", a youthful Hemingway image which hangs in the Hemingway room at the Kennedy Library.Other more riotous paintings show Hemingway in Sloopy Joe's in Key West as well as others depicting Hemingway and Pierce doing battle with various fish in the Gulf Stream.Peirce's portrait of Hemingway was a Time magazine cover on 6 September 1937.
