Somehow I keep adding incorrect information to Walter Ufer's interesting history. On 09/02/2012, I stated that he studied in Dusseldorf in 1897/98. He studied in Dresden in 1897/98. Regrets. Dean A. Porter

Reader...never respond to a question late at night when you are exhausted. Concerning Walter Ufer...he was born in Huckeswagen, Germany in 1876, not Louisville, Kentucky as he claimed until the day he died. Even though he was a proud German, he was an extremely patriotic American, particularly during World War I. He also won the First and Second Altman Prizes at the National Academy of Design, New York. These prizes were for American born artists! Dean A. Porter, Ph. D.

I am currently writing two museum essays an a book on Walter Ufer. In the book I treat his pre-Taos work in greta detail. It reflects his European training, Dusseldork 1897-98 and Munich 1911-1913 as well as his work as an enfgraver in several German cities as well as Luisville and Chicago. UFER WAS BORN IN Huckswagon, Germany in 1876 and not Louisville as he claimed. Being German in America during WWI was not healthy. Dean A. Porter, Ph. D.
I believe that Ufer was actually born in Germany a few years before his family arrived in Kentucky.
