Rockmore in CaliforniaLaurie
I knew Noel when he came out to Northern California for a brief time in the early '80s. He rented a room and balcony from me in Mill Valley. There was renovation going on at Preservation Hall and he had to leave.
He often came down to the kitchen in the evening and have coffee and talk. I found him to be a very interesting person, good at heart and very open about his life story.
He painted a "horse" picture over an old canvas I had and gave it to me as a gift, explaining that he could do that since he was not contracted to any gallery.
Saki Painting by RockmoreJohn
I know who owns the painting Rhonda Carl inquired about. The woman's name actually was "Saki."
I'm in the possession of 3 Rockmore signed prints. 1) Death at Molley's in the Market, 2) Girl and a Dog, and 3)Mother Cabrini. I do not know if these are Noel's, but he was clearly a New Orleans painters judging by the subject matter. The prints are remarkable in that their tecture is so rich you'd think they were paintings. I'm interested in knowing the value of my prints for insurance purposes. Plus I'd like to know more about the guy. I was told he wasn't the nice man Rona recalls, I'd much prefer to believe Rona though; and that my Rockmore's mother was a famious painter. Can any one help me? This is my first stop on my quest. I dated Noel briefly in the mid seventies. He was kind, funny, warm, creative and generous of spirit. He dedicated a painting to me, and I regret not having had the foresight to purchase it at the time. Noel was a sweet guy with a big feather on his chair!
