| | Born in San Francisco, CA on Oct. 28, 1872. Altmann studied with Arthur Mathews at the San Francisco School of Design and in Paris with Laurens, Constant, and Gérome at Académie Julian and Ecole des Beaux Arts. He assisted Mathews at the Mark Hopkins Art Institute in 1900-04 and then was director of art education in the San Francisco public schools. As well as an artist and teacher, he was a lecturer and writer. He died in San Francisco on June 13, 1944.
