A painter and copyist, Alexandre Alaux was active in New Orleans
between 1869 and 1932 as a portraitist especially miniatures, and
painter of historical tableaux, religious subjects, marine genre and
still life.
He was born in France, and as an infant, was taken by his mother to New
York City, and then to New Orleans when he was four years old. He
was sent back to France for schooling but returned to New Orleans where
