 Alexandre Altmann (Alexander Altman) was born to a poor Jewish family in Kyiv region in 1885. At the age of 11 Altman flew to Odessa where he worked as tailor and fitter. A local artist Doroshenko suggested to young Altman that he should study art.
In 1905 Altman moved to Vienna and then to Paris where he studied art at the Art Academy. His first solo exhibit took place in 1908. Altman painted impressionist landscapes in the vicinity of Paris and exhibited his works at Izdebsky’s Salon (1909-1910).
