| | Born in Bermuda on Dec. 9, 1843. Almira Higgs came to California in 1873 and settled in Santa Barbara where she became the wife of local merchant Nathaniel Austin. After the death of her husband, she and her niece, Almira Austin Judson, spent many years in Paris and Munich studying art. Mrs. Austin tended to paint in the dark tones of the Munich school and made many copies of the Old Masters in the Louvre. Her last 22 years were spent in San Francisco with her niece at 123 Edgewood Avenue.
