Born in Bergen, Norway, he established a studio in Boston, Massachusetts and became known there as a portrait painter. Later in his career, he also painted numerous landscapes including snow scenes with figures and horses.
Andersen studied at the Cowles Art School, the British Academy, the Art Institute of Chicago, and in Paris, 1891 to 1894, was at the Academy Julian as a student of Jean Paul Laurens and Benjamin Constant.
