A botanical illustrator as well as staunch crusader for women's rights, Blanche Ames was born and raised in Lowell, Massachusetts in a pioneering, wealthy New England family. Their income derived from woolen mills and her father's earnings as a Civil War general, United States Senator, as well as governor of Mississippi during the Reconstruction period.

She was encouraged to excel and enrolled in Smith College where she was a star athlete and showed early art ability. She married Oakes Am (showing 500 of 1941 characters).
