This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| Candida Alvarez was born in Brooklyn, New York on February 2, 1955. Her parents came to the United States from Puerto Rico in the 1950s. She studied at Fordham University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1977, and Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 1981. Alvarez' art aims at inclusiveness. Personal and cultural symbols, narrative, everyday artifacts, abstraction and representation coexist in her multipaneled compositions.
Alvarez and her husband, Dawoud Bey, a photographer, have been artists-in-residence at the Phillips Academy Addison Gallery of American Art. They have one child, a son.
Compiled and submitted August 2004 by Jean Ershler Schatz, artist and researcher from Laguna Woods, California.
