This biography from the Archives of AskART:
The following biographical information has been provided by Jackie Schmidt, whose husband was the nephew of the artist.

1) The information in your database that Carol "spent most of her life in San Francisco" is incorrect. She grew up and lived in San Rafael (Marin County, CA) all of her life, except for a brief period during WW II when she lived elsewhere in the US because her husband, Walter Abraham, was posted there (he was in the Army). They were married for 59 years until her death.

2) Her father Carl and her brother Lorenz both held the position of President of the Schmidt Lithograph Company in San Francisco, which was founded by her Great Uncle Max Schmidt.

3) In her 20s she painted plein aire landscapes in gouache on paper of scenes in Marin County. The painting exhibited at the 1940 exhibition in the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco was called Paper Mill Creek.

4) Prior to her marriage in 1938, she signed her paintings with her maiden name, "Carol Bertha Schmidt".

SOURCES for the above: Kurt Lorenz Schmidt (nephew), Lorenz Lenz Schmidt (brother), Alice Rhoda Schmidt (sister-in-law), Robert Bradford (son-in-law), and Marie Louise Schmidt Early (sister)
