| Working out of a studio in Richford, Vermont, Charles Andrus was a late
19th and early 20th-century painter, art teacher and commercial artist
who, using gold leaf, designed engraved advertisements and
brochures. He became most known also for his designs and
paintings on theatre curtains, one of them reflecting his travels to
Virginia where he visited Civil War sites and likely saw the Natural
Bridge, which was the subject of his curtain for the North Hyde Park
