Press release ...
Dan Mitchell Allison "Stolen Flowers "
At Tembo/Colaborative Press, 303 11 th Street in the Heights
March 2 thru March 31, 2002
Opening Reception 5 PM to 9 PM Saturday, March 2, 2002
New works by Dan Mitchell Allison, "Stolen Flowers" began in 1999 with a series of small floral poly-photogravures and superimposed excerpts from a series of poems extracted from the artist's unfinished novel about the people living in a small imaginary town somewhere in east Texas. Allison claims the series won't be finished until it gets published into something to put under the short leg of a coffee table, or the residents erect a statue in honor of artists and liars, which ever comes first.
Allison says," Right now there are only a few characters in town but I'm sure as time goes on we will have quite a crowd. Amos Grisham is the central character for now and his lost love of many years back is Mary L~ Favor. Laura Kelly though, a young woman, has just entered Amos's field of vision after he has given himself a good knock on the head with his cane while trying to harvest some pecans out of the trees around the courthouse square in the 23 "x 24 " poly- photogravure suite, "Searching," "Amazed," and "Lost." And that's all I know "
A dozen new works for the show are taken from bits and pieces of old movie footage. Some people in town are taking a walk, some are watching TV and there is a couple in the back seat of the 73 El Dorado up on blocks beside the Phillips station Amos used to work at. Soon you realized that's how Amos got to be the mayor many years ago No, not in the back seat of the car, he was the gas station attendant at the only pumps in town and got to meet everyone.
"We never actually see the characters in Smitherwood, but rather listen in on what they are thinking. The characters are giving me a vehicle to do a little story telling and maybe some art on the side while I'm at it, " says Allison.
"Technically, the process starts when I use my computer's scanner as a "camera" putting objects, in this case flowers, directly on the scanner to make a digital film positive. This positive is printed out in black and white and then used to burn a plastic plate with light. I'm also using the computer to capture and enhance bits ofvideo tape to do the same thing, and will resemble works like "Jake's" (the remake of Open All Night.)" .
The result is an intaglio plate much like an etching plate that is hand colored in the plate with industrial strength lithography pigments and then run through an etching press. This process is repeated three times for each impression, once for each of the primary colors. After the impression has dried, it is then coated with a U .v. blocking emulsion. Lastly the work is coated with an acrylic coat and mounted on the Reeves BFK.
