| The following biography is from a Brookgreen Gardens brochure, Sculpture by Edmond Amateis, copyright 1937. The Butler Institute does not own any pieces by this sculptor.
Edmond Amateis was born of American parents in Rome, Italy, on February 27th,1897. His father, Louis Amateis was also a sculptor and professor of fine arts at Columbian University in Washington, D.C. where the son received his early education. His studies at the Beaux-Arts Instittute of Design, New York, begun in 1916, were broken by service in the United States Army during the World War.
While in Paris he spent four months at the Academie Julian with Boucher and Landowski as his teachers. A second period of study at the Beaux-Arts Institute was combined with work in the studios of Henry Shrady and John Gregory. In 1921 Amateis won the fellowship of the American Academy in Rome for the next three years.
After his return to the United States he received several important commissions for architectural sculpture : two aquatic war horses for the Baltimore War Memorial and a pediment and twelve metopes for the Buffalo Historical Society Building. Further works of this kind were a colossal relief for the Rochester Times-Union Building, the long panel on the front of the Kansas City Liberty Memorial done in 1933, a pair of griffins for the Acacia Life Insurance Building, and a relief and spandrels for the Department of Labor and Interstate Commerce Building, Washington, D.C., recently completed.
He is the author of a relief for the Kerckhoff Mausoleum, Los Angeles, and a memorial to William M. Davidson at Pittsburgh. He has designed many fountain and garden figures and has also modeled numerous portrait busts and small bronzes. In 1929 Summer won the Avery Prize given by the Architectural League, and in 1933, Circe the McClees Prize at the Pennsylvania Academy. He was for a time Associate in Sculpture at Columbia University. He is a member of the National Sculpture Society and the Architectural League and an associate of the National Academy of Design. |
