From Ohio, Eliphalet Andrews became the founder and Director of the Corcoran School of Art from 1877 to 1902, having been encouraged and funded by W.W. Corcoran. Andrews was a noted portrait painter whose subjects included many U.S. Presidents and a full-length portrait of Martha Washington. He was married to artist Marietta Minnigerode.
He graduated from Marietta College in Ohio and then studied in Paris under Bonnat and at the Dusseldorf Academy.
