Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Ellen Ahrens was a student at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under Thomas Eakins. She also studied at Drexel Institute under Howard Pyle. She received recognition for her oil painting and miniatures.
