| | Born in Minnesota in 1892. Atwater grew up in Denver, Colorado. After graduating from college there, he studied at Read's Art School. By 1930 he had moved to Los Angeles and was eking out a living as an interior decorator. During his leisure he began painting desert landscapes. By the 1940s he had settled in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
