Biography from Odon Wagner Gallery & Odon Wagner Contemporary:
| Born in Toronto, Ontario, George Franklin Arbuckle attended the Ontario
College of Art (OCAD) where he studied with John William Beatty
(1869-1941). Following graduation from OCAD, he succeeded in
supporting himself through art: by selling his paintings and by
teaching at Northern Vocational School and Franz Johnston's Art School
at Georgian Bay.
Even during leaner times, he relied on his art to land a job as a
comercial artist, working in Montreal and Ottawa for the Bomac
Engravers. His special knowledge of historical subjects
contributed greatly to his stature as an illustrator.
His
paintings are often representational, peopled views of the rural and
urban landscape painted in varying degrees of realism and
impressionism. His sensitivity to facial expressions, a balance
between caricature and realism, resulted in his art occasionally
appearing on the cover of Maclean's Magazine.
He is
represented in the permaneent collections of the Art Gallery of Ontario
in Toronto (AGO) and the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa.
