This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| George Oliver Annable was born in Providence, Rhode Island, the son of
a cobbler. He was trained as a stone cutter and marble worker at
the stoneyard of Mr. Tingley in Providence. In 1851 and 1853, he
won prizes or medals for his cameo portraits and busts at the
exhibitions of the Rhode Island Society for the Encouragement of
Domestic Industry.
He made busts of General Greene and Dr. Wayland and others, and from
these commissions made enough money to enable him to achieve his dream
of going to Europe to study painting. He studied with Rothermel in
Paris and with Page in Rome, staying in Europe for four years.
As a painter he was not successful and apparently sculpture no longer attracted him; in any case he made no mark in either art.
He died in Brooklyn, New York, when he was about fifty-eight years old.
