| Growing up in California during the 1960s, J Chester Armstrong graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a degree in philosophy. He then went to Central America and was inspired by the Mayan Indian temple carvings.
Following that time period, he moved to a small town in Vermont where he became fascinated with older building built by hand. He worked on restoring these buildings and began carving with tools.
